The confirmation came straight from the studio at Blizzcon 2026, where Overwatch art director Dion Rogers and lead hero producer Kenny Hudson sat down to discuss the game's future, including the newly announced vampire-inspired support hero Doctrine. Somewhere in the middle of all that, the elephant in the room got addressed directly.
Why anyone was even asking
Tracer was everywhere when Overwatch launched in 2016. Her silhouette was on the box art. Her face was in every ad. She was the shorthand for the entire game's identity. But over the past couple of years, she's been noticeably absent from major crossover events and promotional pushes, which quietly started a conversation in the community about whether the game had quietly moved on from her.

The Tracer conversation was a sidebar to a bigger discussion about where Overwatch is heading. Doctrine is the game's newest support hero, vampire-themed and with direct lore ties to Doomfist. He hails from Zimbabwe, Africa, and worked for Doomfist's family before the events of the game, which gives him an immediate narrative anchor that a lot of recent heroes have lacked.
Rogers explained that the vampire concept came from lead narrative designer Miranda Moyer, who asked what a vampire would look like in the Overwatch universe. From there, the design team leaned in hard, building the kit, concept art, and visual identity around that theme. "Making him hail from Zimbabwe, Africa, gives him that immediate heritage and connection to Doomfist," Rogers said. "He worked for Doomfist's family at some point in his life, and helped build arms for Doomfist, so it made sense that he would reach out to him to get his arm back."
Doctrine is nearly the last of 10 heroes added to Overwatch in 2026 alone. That's a significant content pace, and when asked about what's left to achieve, both Rogers and Hudson pointed forward rather than back. "There's always room for more heroes," Rogers said. “There's a lot more we're cooking.”
Ten heroes in a year and still going
The sheer volume of new characters in 2026 is worth pausing on. Ten heroes in a single year is aggressive by any shooter's standard. The Overwatch team has clearly shifted into a higher production cadence, and the Blizzcon announcements suggest that pace isn't slowing down.
