Grand Theft Auto 6 now has its first officially confirmed cast member: Stephen Root, the veteran character actor best known for voicing Bill Dauterive in King of the Hill and playing the quietly tragic Milton Waddams in Office Space. Root confirmed his involvement at the BAFTA TV Tea Party, held at The Maybourne Beverly Hills in California, where he was attending in support of his Emmy-nominated role in Apple's Widow's Bay.
How the secret slipped out before he said a word
Root didn't exactly choose the timing of this reveal. Speaking to AP at the event, he acknowledged that the cat had been out of the bag for a while: "I think from the first rollout of GTA that they were doing almost a year ago they had my character in there, and there were too many people that knew me from King of the Hill and my voice. So, I think that secret kind of got divulged then."
Here's the thing: Root has one of the most distinctive voices in the business. Fans who grew up watching King of the Hill spotted the resemblance in early GTA 6 trailers, and the speculation spread fast. Root's confirmation at the BAFTA event just made it official.
"I'm so happy to be involved with it; it's an amazing thing to look at," he added.
Who is Brian Heder, and why does he matter
Root plays Brian Heder, a veteran drug smuggler operating out of the Leonida Keys. Brian runs his operation out of a boatyard alongside his third wife, Lori, and has the kind of history that makes him immediately interesting as a supporting character. He prefers to let others do the actual dirty work while he stays in the background.
He also appears to be protagonist Jason Duval's landlord, though in a very GTA arrangement: Brian doesn't charge Jason any rent. The relationship between the two characters already sounds like the kind of layered, morally complicated dynamic Rockstar does well.
Brian is not a background NPC. He has a dedicated profile on the official GTA 6 website under the "Only in Leonida" section, which puts him firmly in the category of significant story characters rather than set dressing.
What this means for the rest of the cast
Root's confirmation is notable not just for who he is, but for what it signals. Rockstar has been characteristically tight-lipped about GTA 6's full cast, and no other actor has officially gone on record about their involvement. The fact that Root essentially confirmed himself, because his voice was too recognizable to hide, suggests Rockstar's casting strategy leans heavily on established character actors rather than A-list celebrities.
That approach fits the game's tone. GTA has always been built on sharp, specific performances rather than marquee names.
