Overworld, the developer partnered with blockchain games publisher Xterio, has successfully raised $10 million in a seed funding round for its upcoming anime-inspired free-to-play action RPG. The studio is channeling these funds into the development of its debut game, temporarily named Overworld, set within the Xterio ecosystem.
Jeremy Horn, COO of Xterio, shared insights into the game's design philosophy in an interview, stating, "Overworld aims to deliver short yet highly replayable gameplay loops, focusing on character building, enemy defeat, resource collection, and crafting within a vibrant hub." Horn also went on to emphasize the potential in the largely untapped Western market for anime-inspired games.
Impressive Funding Round
The funding round, led by Hashed, The Spartan Group, Sanctor Capital, and Galaxy Interactive, with additional support from Hashkey, Big Brain Holdings, and Foresight Ventures, underscores the industry's confidence in Overworld. Horn stated that the funds will be instrumental in recruiting talent as the studio actively expands its team.
A notable feature of Overworld is its integration of NFTs and digital ownership within the game. Horn clarified that these features are optional, emphasizing the studio's commitment to delivering a compelling gaming experience. "Digital ownership alone is not the key; a fantastic game is," Horn asserted.
Overworld Incarna
Overworld, with a year of active development, recently engaged the community by selling Overworld Incarna, a collection of 6,000 assets. Horn highlighted the studio's approach to digital ownership as a means of enhancing the gaming community but underscored the importance of compelling content as the foundation.
Ryan Kim, a founding partner at Hashed, expressed confidence in Overworld's potential, stating, "Overworld, the flagship social RPG from the established Xterio platform, is poised to redefine online multiplayer RPGs in the crypto space." Kim lauded Overworld's leadership and experienced team, anticipating success in the evolving landscape of web3 gaming.
