The Cards Of Pokémon TCG: Pokémon GO Part 25: Mewtwo VSTAR Gold

Niantic is marking Pokémon GO's 10th anniversary with one of its most generous giveaways yet: a free Timed Research encounter with a fully maxed-out Mewtwo, available to every trainer on the planet right now. The event runs until Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time, so the clock is already ticking. Fans of the franchise who also grew up chasing Mewtwo in Pokémon Gold Version know exactly how much this particular Pokémon means to the series.

What you actually get from this event

This is not a standard Mewtwo encounter. The Psychic-type comes with maxed-out stats, a Special Background, and has Mega Mewtwo Y unlocked at Mega Level 3 right out of the gate. That last part is significant. Reaching Mega Level 3 normally requires a serious time and Mega Energy investment, so getting it handed to you on day one is a meaningful shortcut for players who want to run Mega Mewtwo Y in raids immediately.

The key here is that this is Timed Research, not a standard Special Research task. That means the tasks and their rewards must both be completed and claimed before the deadline. Starting the research and leaving it half-finished will not preserve your progress past September 6.

warning
Simply activating the Timed Research is not enough. All tasks must be completed and all rewards claimed before September 6, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time or the encounter disappears.

From Times Square to your neighborhood

The global rollout is a direct follow-up to an in-person event at New York City's Times Square on July 9, where attendees got a first look at Mewtwo arriving in a special live takeover. That version came with a Times Square background and different stats. Trainers who caught Mewtwo at that event received a distinct variant, and Niantic has confirmed the Times Square background Mewtwo will return at some point in the future.

The worldwide Timed Research version is a separate reward entirely, built specifically to bring the 10th anniversary milestone to players who were not in NYC.

Ten years is a long run for any mobile game

Pokémon GO launched in the summer of 2016 and became a cultural moment almost overnight. A decade later, Niantic is still finding ways to reward the trainer base, and a free maxed-out Mewtwo is about as loud a statement as you can make for an anniversary. Mewtwo has been the franchise's signature Legendary since the original games, and its status as the most powerful Psychic-type in GO makes this giveaway genuinely useful rather than just symbolic.

What most players miss with Timed Research events is the distinction between activating it and finishing it. Log in, pull up the research tab, and work through the tasks before the deadline rather than waiting until the last few days.

For more on navigating the Pokémon franchise across its many entries, the Pokémon Gold Version strategy guides cover the classic generation that helped cement Mewtwo's legendary reputation. Broader gaming guides are also available if you want to dig into other titles while you wait for your next Pokémon GO research reset.
