PS5 Owners Are Organizing a Weeklong PlayStation Blackout in August

Sony Teases Ultra-Customizable DualSense Edge PS5 Controller | PCMag

A coordinated protest is taking shape across the PlayStation community, with owners planning to shut down their consoles or go fully offline for seven straight days this August.

The movement, which has picked up real momentum over the past few days, targets the period from August 23 to August 30, 2026. The organizers want Sony to feel the silence, both in server traffic and in PlayStation Store revenue.

How the blackout is supposed to work

The ask is straightforward. For that seven-day window, participants are being called on to do three things: stay logged out of PlayStation Network, avoid playing anything online, and spend nothing on the PlayStation Store. The logic is that a meaningful drop in active users and purchase activity is the kind of signal Sony cannot ignore the way it can ignore social media noise.

Does It Play, a group that has long championed physical media and offline game ownership, is spearheading the campaign. Stop Killing Games, the organization pushing for legislation that would prevent publishers from remotely disabling games players have already paid for, is lending its support as well.

The blackout targets Sony's revenue and server metrics directly. Participants who simply play offline single-player games without logging in are still counted as taking part, but the organizers are clear that avoiding PSN spending carries the most weight.

The grievances stacking up behind this

Here's the thing: this is not a single-issue protest. The blackout statement lists several reasons players have reached a breaking point with Sony.

The biggest flashpoint is PlayStation's announcement that all physical PS5 releases will become code-in-a-box products from January 2028 onward. That decision landed roughly a month ago and the backlash has not cooled. The fact that only around 27 percent of PS5 owners have the all-digital edition makes the move feel especially tone-deaf to the majority of the install base.

Beyond the disc issue, the statement also calls out the sudden closure of Bluepoint Games, Sony's naive push into live service games that largely failed to connect, and a perceived unwillingness to revive dormant franchises. Twisted Metal and Sly Cooper are specifically named as series the community wants back.

Then there is the separate but related situation where PlayStation deleted 500 movies from customer accounts, which did nothing to reassure anyone who was already skeptical about the permanence of digital ownership.

Whether this will actually move Sony

The skeptics are already loud in the replies. The practical counterargument is hard to dismiss: the players most likely to see and act on this call to action are already the ones who care about physical media, consumer rights, and long-term game preservation. The millions of PS5 owners logging into Fortnite or Call of Duty daily probably will not hear about it, and even if they do, a seven-day pause is a real ask for people whose social gaming lives run through PSN.

What most players miss is that the goal may not be to actually dent Sony's revenue in a measurable way. Sustained, organized pressure that keeps a story alive in the press for weeks is its own kind of leverage. PlayStation has already been forced to acknowledge the disc backlash publicly after staying quiet longer than anyone expected, and that silence clearly did not help them.

For PS5 owners who also play on PC, this is a good window to catch up on a backlog or try something new. If you're spending time away from PSN anyway, our Black Ops 7 and Warzone Season 5 release date guide has everything you need to know about what dropped on July 23 and what is coming next. Season 5 is live now across both titles.

The blackout window is still nearly a month out. How much momentum it builds between now and August 23 will tell us a lot about whether Sony needs to take it seriously. For more gaming news and player-side coverage as this story develops, the guides hub has you covered across platforms.
