New studio from Resident Evil creator ...

Shinji Mikami is back in the game, and this time he has the team behind Stellar Blade in his corner.

Shift Up, the Korean developer best known for Stellar Bladeand Goddess of Victory: Nikke, announced on April 1 that it has completed a full acquisition of Unbound Inc., the Tokyo-based studio founded by Mikami. The deal was finalized by acquiring all of Unbound's shares, and according to the official announcement covered by Kotaku, Mikami himself expressed enthusiasm about working alongside Shift Up CEO Hyung-Tae Kim.

What the acquisition video is quietly telling you

Here's the thing: the announcement video does a lot more than introduce two companies shaking hands. The footage tours Unbound's Tokyo office and features developer soundbites, but scattered throughout are glimpses of terrifying creature designs lurking in the background. Winged demons, imps, and what looks unmistakably like a biblically accurate angel all make appearances. Even a team dinner scene features staff sitting down to what appears to be a horrifying anglerfish.

This is not subtle. Mikami is working on a horror game, and Shift Up wants you to know it.

Mikami confirmed as much himself, stating he is "actively creating and producing a new game title" and that he has been "fully involved on-site" developing what he describes as a "large game." His words: "I think you can expect a lot from us soon."

Unbound's target and what it is building

Unbound was founded in May 2023, shortly after Mikami departed Tango Gameworks, the studio he established in 2010. Tango's credits include The Evil Within, Hi-Fi Rush, and Ghostwire: Tokyo. Before that, Mikami co-founded PlatinumGames and directed Vanquish, and before that he was at Capcom directing the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4, and producing Devil May Cry and Dino Crisis.

The man has a resume that reads like a horror and action hall of fame.

Unbound's own stated goal, per its website, is to grow to around 100 people and build an original IP aimed at a worldwide audience. The project currently in development is described as a "high-end" original IP built on Unreal Engine 5, targeting PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox platforms.

Why Shift Up makes sense as the parent company

Shift Up is not a typical acquirer. The studio built its reputation on visually ambitious, character-driven games with strong production values, and Stellar Blade proved it can compete at the highest level of console development. Pairing that infrastructure with Mikami's track record in horror and action is a combination that should make any genre fan pay attention.

Mikami has not directed a game since The Evil Within in 2014. More than a decade later, with a new studio, a new backer, and creature designs that suggest something genuinely unsettling in the works, the wait for his next project feels a lot more concrete than it did even a week ago.
