Sponge Break Hits Steam July 30 for Under $8

If your gaming group has been looking for a budget co-op game that fits on one screen and ends friendships in the most chaotic way possible, Sponge Break just set a date.

Developer Goose Byte and publisher Balor Games have confirmed the game launches on Steam on July 30 for $7.99. That price point alone puts it firmly in the "just buy it" category for anyone who regularly plays with 2-4 friends.

What you're actually doing in this game

The premise is exactly as absurd as it sounds. You and up to three friends are sponges. You have escaped the kitchen sink. You are now on a raft made of questionable materials, floating down increasingly hostile rapids, and your primary tool is a plunger-hook that doubles as a grappling device.

The physics system is the core of the whole thing. Steer wrong and the raft flips, scattering gear, dealing damage, and potentially ending the run. Every collision has real consequences, which means every mistake is also immediately someone's fault. That's the co-op tension right there.

Drop-in play and proximity voice chat

Here's the thing: Sponge Break is built around the reality of how friend groups actually play games. Drop-in cooperative play means a late arrival can join mid-session without breaking anything, though the game's own description cheerfully notes they will "immediately make it worse."

The proximity voice chat is a genuinely interesting feature. Sponge characters lip-sync to players' voices in real time, so your panicked screaming when the raft hits a rock will be visually represented by your sponge's face. It's a small detail, but it's the kind of thing that makes stream content and friend sessions significantly funnier.

Solo play is fully supported too, which matters for a game at this price. You shouldn't need to wrangle a group just to see what the game is about.

tip
Sponge Break supports 1-4 players with full solo mode and drop-in co-op, so you can play it alone or with a full crew without any friction.

More than 100 cosmetics and multiple biomes

The progression system leans into customization. Over 100 unlockable cosmetic options cover sponge eyes, eyebrows, mouths, hats, inflatable buoys, plunger skins, and emotes. The emotes specifically are designed for two purposes: celebrating a clean run, and pointing at whoever caused the last disaster.

Biomes include sewers, rivers, and abandoned facilities, each with their own environmental hazards. Between levels, safehouses let the team restock, revive downed players, and, per the developers, "have a quick argument before setting sail again." The writing in the feature list alone suggests Goose Byte knows exactly what kind of game this is.

Fighting beavers is also apparently on the agenda. No further context was provided, which is probably the right call.

Five days away and worth watching

At $7.99, Sponge Break sits in a price range where the risk is low enough that co-op groups will grab it on impulse. The physics-driven raft traversal and proximity voice chat are doing real mechanical work here, not just serving as feature bullet points. Whether the biome variety holds up across a full playthrough is the main question, but that's what launch week is for.

If you're tracking other upcoming releases with exact regional start times, the Tides of Tomorrow release date and start times guide has the breakdown you need. For everything else launching soon, the full gaming guides hub keeps the release calendar organized.

Sponge Break arrives on Steam on July 30. If you're planning a session, you'll want to check the Saros release date and exact start times page as a reference for how regional launches tend to roll out, since Steam releases often follow similar timing patterns across regions.
