Stranger Than Heaven: Everything we ...

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is finally ready to show more of its enigmatic new project. Stranger Than Heaven, the game that spent months hiding behind the codename Project Century, is set to headline Microsoft's Xbox Partner Preview event on Thursday, March 26, and if you've been waiting for real details on this one, this is the moment to tune in.

The event will feature "an in-depth look" at Stranger Than Heaven, making it the clear centerpiece of the broadcast. That framing matters. This isn't a blink-and-you'll-miss-it teaser slot. The studio behind Like a Dragon and the Yakuza series is apparently ready to pull back the curtain in a meaningful way.

From Project Century to the Spotlight

Stranger Than Heaven was first unveiled at The Game Awards in December 2024 under the working title Project Century, before being formally named earlier this year. What's known so far is genuinely intriguing but deliberately sparse: the game is set in Japan in 1915, which marks a dramatic departure from the modern urban settings the studio has built its reputation on.

Here's the thing, though. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio hasn't even confirmed whether Stranger Than Heaven is a new entry in the Like a Dragon / Yakuza lineage or something entirely separate. That ambiguity has fueled no shortage of speculation since the initial reveal, and the March 26 event looks like the best chance yet to get some real answers.

What Else Is on the Card

The Partner Preview isn't a one-game show. Microsoft confirmed the broadcast will also include:

  • An update on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl from GSC Game World
  • New footage of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn
  • Content from Owlcat Games
  • "First looks and announcements" from additional titles coming to Xbox consoles, Xbox on PC, and Game Pass

The Partner Preview series is Xbox's dedicated showcase format for third-party developers, and this instalment is stacked. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has had a turbulent post-launch period, so any update there will be closely watched by its community.

The Xbox Partner Preview stream goes live on March 26 at 10am Pacific / 1pm Eastern / 5pm UK across Xbox's YouTube and Twitch channels.

Why Stranger Than Heaven Has Everyone Paying Attention

The Like a Dragon franchise has been on an extraordinary run. After years of cult status, the series broke into mainstream recognition, and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has earned a level of trust from its audience that few developers enjoy. A new project from them, set in a completely different historical era, is exactly the kind of swing fans want to see.

The 1915 Japan setting alone opens up fascinating possibilities. That period sits at the intersection of late Meiji-era tradition and rapid Westernization, which is rich territory for the kind of dense, character-driven storytelling the studio excels at. Whether it connects to the existing Yakuza universe or stands alone, the formal reveal of Stranger Than Heaven earlier this year already generated serious buzz.

What most players miss is that this event could also carry Game Pass news tied to Stranger Than Heaven, given Microsoft explicitly flagged Game Pass announcements as part of the broadcast. That's worth keeping in mind when the stream kicks off.
