Playgama has shared new research on the current state of web game development, revealing how different engines and genres are shaping the web gaming landscape in 2025. The study expands on the company's earlier findings about engine popularity, this time adding detailed genre data to show how developers are approaching projects for browsers and online platforms.

Unity leads, but competition is growing

Unity continues to dominate the web gaming market, powering more than half of all new titles released in the first half of 2025. The engine remains the go-to choice for developers creating 3D and complex projects, thanks to its flexibility and strong support ecosystem. However, Unity's dominance is not uniform across all genres. In nine out of seventeen categories, its share drops below 50 percent.

This decline is most visible in areas with fewer 3D elements. Genres like casual, puzzle, and idle games are seeing a steady shift toward lighter engines, with Construct and Phaser emerging as popular alternatives. These tools are known for being efficient and faster to deploy, making them appealing for developers focused on quick turnarounds and lower system demands.

Niche engines find room to grow

Engines like Defold, GameMaker, and PlayCanvas still occupy smaller market shares, but they are carving out unique spaces in specific genres. PlayCanvas shows strong performance in IO games with a 12.4 percent share, as well as in simulators and animal-themed titles, where it holds over 10 percent in each category.

Defold and GameMaker have established themselves within the Merge genre, with Defold leading at 14.9 percent and GameMaker following at 7.5 percent. These engines may not have the same reach as Unity, but their presence in niche categories indicates a growing variety of tools being used in web development.

Casual games still rule the web

Casual titles remain the most popular genre among new web releases, representing roughly 20 percent of all games launched in early 2025. When combined with puzzles, which account for 14.5 percent, these lighter, more accessible games make up over a third of all new releases.

Action games continue to hold strong with a 10 percent share, while idle games take fourth place at 6 percent and adventure games round out the top five at 5 percent. This spread suggests that web players still favor quick, replayable experiences that are easy to access from any device.

Shifting trends in web development

Playgama founder Dmitry Kachmar notes that the connection between a game's genre and its development engine is becoming clearer. Developers are making more deliberate choices about their tools depending on gameplay goals and complexity. While Unity remains unmatched for 3D projects, simpler genres are increasingly built with lighter and more specialized engines.

This diversity reflects a maturing web gaming ecosystem. Developers are experimenting more with technology, performance, and monetization, leading to broader innovation in the space.

What's next for web games

Looking forward, web games are expected to grow in both quality and depth. Advancements like WebGPU are likely to boost visual performance and help bridge the gap between browser games and traditional downloadable titles. Combined with rising competition and better monetization tools, developers are preparing for a new era where web games can rival mobile and console experiences in sophistication.

The data also points to a growing emphasis on live operations and player retention systems, signaling that browser-based games are entering a new phase of commercial maturity.
