Playful Studios has hit a significant milestone with its latest Wildcard playtest, conducted through the Thousands streaming platform. CEO Paul Bettner revealed that a single two-hour stream pulled in $77,928 in in-app purchases—a figure that underscores both audience engagement and monetization strength. Wildcard, a PC game that fuses sports, MOBA, and character collection into what the studio calls a Character Collection Action Game (CCAG), integrates web3 components through its tie-in with Thousands.

About Thousands

Thousands, built as part of Playful Studios' broader web3 push, acts as the engagement hub for Wildcard. The platform lets spectators, fans, streamers, and creators earn WC tokens by participating in live events. The WC token isn't redeemable for cash yet, but it forms a core piece of the game's ecosystem by rewarding continued involvement.

So far, Wildcard has run 12 live-streamed events on Thousands. Nine were structured exhibition matches that showcased the game's mechanics, while the other three were experimental collaborations with external partners and content creators. These streams have been key for testing both gameplay and community reaction.

Metrics Highlight Engagement and Retention

Beyond the revenue numbers, Bettner shared detailed performance stats that point to strong audience engagement. Average revenue per viewer during these events came in at $109. About 51 percent of viewers converted into paying users—a sign that the content and monetization strategy are well-aligned.

Retention metrics from the streams also show sustained interest. Day 3 retention hit 82 percent, followed by 62 percent on Day 7, 52 percent on Day 14, and 38 percent by Day 30. These numbers suggest viewers aren't just tuning in once—they're coming back over longer stretches, a solid indicator of content value and platform stickiness.

Industry Context and Future Availability

Paul Bettner, known in the industry for co-creating Words With Friends—which Zynga acquired for over $50 million—highlighted the significance of Wildcard's performance in the evolving web3 gaming space. By blending traditional game formats with web3 mechanics in a way that keeps mainstream appeal intact, Playful Studios is aiming to reach both conventional gamers and crypto-native audiences. Wildcard is currently available to follow via its official website and social channels, including its presence on X. Interested users can also wishlist the game on Steam ahead of its broader release.
