World of Warcraft Forever Officially Announced at BlizzCon 2026

Blizzard Entertainment officially pulled back the curtain on World of Warcraft Forever at BlizzCon 2026 today, September 12, putting a real name and a real release date on the project the community has been calling Classic Plus for years. World of Warcraft fans who have been waiting for a permanent vanilla experience finally have their answer, and it is arriving faster than anyone expected.

What Blizzard actually built here

WoW Forever is not a straight reissue of vanilla World of Warcraft. The clearest way to understand it: Blizzard is treating year one of the original game as a permanent foundation, a "time bubble," and then building outward from there without ever breaking the rules of that era. The level cap stays at 60, indefinitely. There is no expansion roadmap, no Burning Crusade waiting in the wings. The philosophy, as executive producer Holly Longdale described it at the opening ceremony, is that “there's no rush here: it's the journey that counts, not the destination.”

That framing matters. WoW Classic launched in 2019 as a faithful recreation of vanilla, but it eventually moved forward through Classic versions of The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria. Forever is Blizzard's answer to players who kept asking for Classic to stop moving. The world itself is the main character here, not a heroic storyline pulling players toward the next patch.

Everything new inside the time bubble

Here is the thing: "time bubble" does not mean static. Blizzard is adding a significant amount of new content to Forever, all of it designed to feel consistent with the original game's era and philosophy.

  • 3 new zones
  • Multiple overhauled existing zones with updated visuals
  • Over 1,000 new quests spread across the full level bracket, not just endgame
  • 9 new dungeons
  • 2 new raids at level 60, one for 10 players and one for 20
  • A new PvP Battleground called Darkspear Islands
  • New professions and reputations
  • Skyborne Elves, a brand new playable race with their own zone

The new quests and content are not exclusively built for level-60 players, which is a smart move. One of the things that made early WoW feel alive was that the leveling world felt populated and purposeful. Blizzard appears to be trying to recreate that density.

Launch timeline and what to expect next

World of Warcraft Forever is already playable on the BlizzCon 2026 show floor. Beta access opens next week on September 17. The full game launches on November 4.

For context, the current live game, World of Warcraft: Midnight, is also receiving a new update called Eclipse that Blizzard detailed separately at BlizzCon. So Blizzard is now running what amounts to three distinct versions of WoW simultaneously: the live expansion track, Classic era servers, and Forever.

Players who want to get a head start before the beta can check out our World of Warcraft strategy guides for everything from zone breakdowns to leveling routes that will help you hit the ground running when Forever opens its doors on November 4.
