Xbox has started emailing players to confirm its disc-to-digital program is now leaving the Xbox Insider testing phase and rolling out to everyone, available with the next system update.
The feature first opened to Xbox Insider members at the end of August. That gave the community roughly a month to stress-test it before Xbox pushed the broader rollout on September 29, 2026.
What the disc-to-digital program actually does
Here's the lowdown: insert a compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc, and the system grants you a digital licence for that game. That licence behaves exactly like a purchase from the Xbox Store. No disc required to play after that point, though you can absolutely keep the physical copy and it will still work as it always has.
The practical upside is cross-device flexibility. Your digital licence works across multiple Xbox consoles, including the Xbox Series S, which has no disc drive at all. Games that support Xbox Play Anywhere also unlock the PC version automatically, and titles with Xbox Cloud Gaming support become streamable the moment you claim the licence.
Delisted games and the growing catalogue
One of the more compelling parts of this program is what it does for preservation. Games that have been pulled from the Xbox Store entirely are still eligible. That includes Deadpool (delisted in 2017), Titanfall (delisted in 2021), Minecraft: Story Mode (delisted in 2019), F1 2021 (delisted in 2023), and Rock Band 4 (delisted in 2025). If you have the disc, you can still claim the digital version.
The community-maintained XCT.live Community Disc to Digital Database currently tracks 1,860 titles. Of those, 1,578 are confirmed working, 221 do not convert, 37 remain unconfirmed, and 24 depend on which regional or edition variant of the disc a player has.
Ubisoft titles were absent when the feature first launched to Insiders, but were added 10 days later. The latest batch of additions, released alongside today's full rollout, appears to be heavily weighted toward Sega titles. Community submissions are pointing to Sonic Superstars, Sonic Colours: Ultimate, Sonic Frontiers, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and multiple entries from the Like a Dragon and Persona series as newly supported.
What this means for your physical library
For anyone sitting on a stack of Xbox One discs, this is worth running through systematically. The conversion takes only a few minutes per title, and the upside of having a digital backup, especially for games that could be delisted in the future, is real.
Xbox has not confirmed the complete list of games added in this latest batch, so the community database at XCT.live is currently the most reliable place to check individual titles. That list updates frequently as players submit results.
With big Xbox releases on the horizon, including Gears of War: E-Day hitting Xbox Game Pass on October 6, this is a good moment to get your digital library in order.
