Zach Cregger Confirms Aunt Gladys Prequel Is Being Written

San Diego Comic-Con 2026 brought a lot of panel surprises, but horror fans got one of the more satisfying updates of the week. Zach Cregger, director of the 2025 film Weapons, stepped onto a panel Thursday afternoon and confirmed that the long-rumored prequel centered on Aunt Gladys is no longer just Hollywood chatter.

"The script is in process now and we're taking it very seriously and it's moving in the right direction," Cregger told the audience. “It's being written, is the short answer.”

How the Gladys prequel went from rumor to reality

The appetite for an Aunt Gladys standalone film surfaced almost immediately after Weapons hit theaters in August 2025. Amy Madigan's performance as the deliberately opaque, mysterious Gladys connected with audiences in a way that made people want more backstory, even though Cregger had intentionally kept her shrouded throughout Weapons.

Within a week of release, Warner Bros. was already in conversations about a prequel. Cregger publicly confirmed in September 2025 that those development talks were legitimate. The project picked up further momentum in April 2026 when Zach Shields (co-writer on Godzilla: King of the Monsters) was brought on as co-writer. The working title is simply Gladys.

Madigan's Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress earlier this year only added fuel to the fire. A prequel now has both the critical credibility and the commercial logic behind it.

Why Gladys works as a standalone story

Cregger was direct about why Weapons kept her backstory locked away. "For the movie Weapons, it really made a lot of sense not to dive into her backstory because the device of Weapons was to keep her very opaque and very mysterious," he said. "However, I think there's an amazing story to be told about where Gladys comes from and how she became what we know her as."

He described the prequel as having "a lot of twists and turns and mysteries and crazy things, kind of like Weapons does," which suggests the tone will stay consistent with what made the original film work. The key here is that Cregger isn't just revisiting a popular character for the sake of it. He has a specific story he wants to tell.

important
Despite active script development, Gladys will not be Cregger's next film. That slot belongs to sci-fi thriller The Flood, an Amblin Entertainment production with a release date set for August 11, 2028. Gladys will follow after that.

A packed slate for Cregger beyond Gladys

Cregger's dance card is full. He's currently finishing up his Resident Evil film, which premieres September 18 and runs just under 90 minutes. At the same panel, he described his approach to the film as putting "my foot all the way down on the gas pedal and not let up until the end of the movie," which sounds like exactly what fans of his work would want.

He also shared the stage with directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (known for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Game Night), who are currently working on Apple TV's upcoming Mayday starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh.

On top of Resident Evil, The Flood, and Gladys, Cregger is also producing a Siren Head film backed by Warner Bros., pulling from the creepypasta horror space.

What this means for fans waiting on Gladys

The realistic timeline puts Gladys no earlier than 2029 or 2030, given that The Flood lands in August 2028 and production on Gladys hasn't started. That's a wait, but the news that the script is actively being written with a co-writer already attached is a meaningful step forward from where things stood even six months ago.

For fans of Cregger's brand of horror storytelling, the broader picture is encouraging. His output is consistent, his projects have clear creative intent behind them, and Warner Bros. is backing multiple entries in what's quietly becoming a connected horror universe.
