Leather is one of those materials you need constantly in Palworld and never seem to have enough of. It goes into armor at every tier, every Pal saddle you will ever craft, feed bags, pouches, and furniture. The good news is that leather drops from a wide range of Pals, several of which spawn right near your starting area. The bad news is that the recipes scale up aggressively, so passive farming becomes worth setting up sooner than most players expect.
Which Pals drop leather?
Leather is a non-craftable material, meaning you cannot produce it at a workbench. Your only options are hunting Pals in the wild, buying from a merchant, or running a livestock ranch.
Best early-game Pals for leather
These four Pals are the most accessible targets when you are just starting out:
Eikthyrdeer is the standout here. Three to four leather per kill adds up quickly, and you can find herds without traveling far. Fuack clusters on the western beach are worth sweeping through early on since multiple spawn together.

Mid and late-game leather sources
Once you move beyond the starting region, the leather drop pool expands significantly. Notable Pals include Direhowl packs in the northwest autumn forest, Chillet north of the starting zone, Kitsun, Fenglope, Grizzbolt, Mammorest, Mossanda, Pyrin, Verdash, and Yakumo. The full drop list covers over 60 Pals across all biomes, so leather never becomes scarce as you explore new areas.
Can you buy leather?
Yes. The Wandering Merchant at the Small Settlement sells leather for 150 Gold Coins each. The sell price is only 15 Gold, so buying in bulk gets expensive fast. Use the merchant to fill gaps rather than as a primary source. Gold is better spent elsewhere unless you are in a pinch.
How to farm leather passively with a ranch
The most efficient long-term method is assigning certain Pals to a Livestock Farm at your base. The farm unlocks at level 5 and costs 50 Wood, 20 Stone, and 30 Fiber to build.
Two Pals produce leather passively on the ranch:
- Melpaca (alpaca-type Pal, may spawn near starting zone)
- Vixy (small fox-type Pal, also found close to the starting area)
Both Pals also have useful base work suitabilities beyond leather production, making them worth catching early regardless. Vixy in particular is one of the better early-game ranch Pals given how accessible it is.

What is leather used for?
Leather feeds into three major crafting categories: armor, Pal Gear, and utility items. The volume requirements scale hard as you progress.
Armor crafting recipes
Pelt Armor is the earliest leather-heavy recipe, starting at 10 leather for the Common version and climbing to 67 leather for Legendary. Heat and Cold Resistant variants add Flame or Ice Organs on top. Metal Armor tiers layer in Ingots and Cloth alongside leather, while Refined Metal Armor swaps in Refined Ingots and High Quality Cloth. Legendary Metal Armor costs 67 leather, and the top-tier Refined Metal Armor Legendary requires 100 leather plus 202 Refined Ingots.
Pal Gear and saddles
Every mount saddle in the game requires leather. Early saddles like the Rushoar Saddle (3 leather) and Melpaca Saddle (3 leather) are cheap. Mid-tier saddles like the Nitewing Saddle (20 leather) and Fenglope Saddle (30 leather) start demanding more. High-end saddles such as the Frostallion Saddle (100 leather), Paladius Saddle (100 leather), and Necromus Saddle (100 leather) represent the upper ceiling. Jetragon's Missile Launcher also costs 100 leather, making it one of the most leather-intensive single crafts in the game.
Partner Skill harnesses like Foxparks' Harness (3 leather) and Galeclaw's Gloves (20 leather) are also gated behind leather, which is why many Partner Skills feel locked until you farm enough of it.

Saddles require significant leather
Utility items
Leather also appears in feed bags and pouches, both of which are quality-of-life upgrades you will want as your base grows:
Furniture like the Leather Chair (1 leather), Leather Couch (3 leather), and Leather Armchair (2 leather) are minor costs by comparison but worth noting if you are building out a base.
What is the fastest way to get leather early?
Hunt Eikthyrdeer repeatedly in the starting region. The 3 to 4 leather per kill makes it the highest-yield early target by a significant margin. Pair that with catching Melpaca or Vixy for your ranch as soon as you hit level 5, and you will have a steady passive supply running alongside your active farming.
For players who have progressed further, sweeping through Direhowl packs in the northwest forest adds up quickly since they hunt in groups and each one drops leather alongside other loot.
