Subnautica 2 hides one of its most punishing walls behind a temperature system most players don't see coming. Around 250 meters from your starting lifepod, the ocean floor shifts into something resembling an underwater desert, and your PDA immediately tells you to back off. That heat warning isn't decorative. Stay too long and you'll die. Here's exactly what you need to push through it.
What is the heat barrier in Subnautica 2?
The waters directly around your lifepod sit at roughly 20 degrees Celsius. Comfortable. The moment you approach the hot biome, a red half-circle indicator appears on your screen with a temperature reading that can range anywhere from 30 to 80 degrees. Your character's default heat tolerance caps out at 80 degrees, but damage starts accumulating well before that threshold. Even temperatures between 30 and 70 degrees will chip away at your health the longer you remain in the zone.
The hot biome itself pushes beyond 80 degrees in places, which means your default biology simply can't handle it without modification.

What do you need to survive the heat?
The solution is the Heat Tolerance Adaptation, a genetic mutation that raises your survivable temperature ceiling to 100 degrees. That doesn't make you invincible inside the hot biome, but it gives you enough buffer to explore without taking fatal damage quickly. Thermal vents scattered through the area still deal damage up close, so you'll want to stay aware of your surroundings even after unlocking it.
Heat Tolerance is one of four Adaptations available in Subnautica 2. Like the others, you acquire it by interacting with an Angel Comb, a specific biological structure on Proteus that grants genetic mutations when treated.
You cannot access the Heat Tolerance Angel Comb until you clear three connected Bloom infestations. Skipping straight to the comb won't work.
How to unlock the Sonic Resonator
Before you can clear any Bloom infestation, you need the Sonic Resonator. This tool lets you destroy Bloom Cankers, which are the growths that lock Angel Combs in an infested state. Without it, you can't progress toward Heat Tolerance at all. Make sure you have the Sonic Resonator in your inventory before heading northwest.
If you're still getting your bearings on Proteus, the Subnautica 2 beginner's guide with 15 survival tips covers the early-game systems you'll want to understand before tackling Bloom sites.

How to clear the Bloom infestations and unlock Heat Tolerance
The three Bloom infestations you need are all located roughly 200 meters northwest of the starting lifepod. The layout is one large central site flanked by two smaller satellite infestations. You need to clear the smaller sites first before the central Angel Comb becomes accessible.
Here's the full process step by step:
- Head northwest approximately 200 meters from the lifepod.
- Locate the two smaller Bloom infestation sites north and south of the main site. You can track them by following the tendrils branching out from the central cave.
- At each smaller site, find and destroy the three Bloom Cankers surrounding the central flower using your Sonic Resonator. Watch out for Bloom Parasites swimming in the area.
- Repeat the process at the second smaller site.
- Return to the central Bloom infestation. A Marrowbreach patrols this area, so deal with it or avoid it while you work.
- Destroy the remaining Bloom Cankers at the central site.
- The central Angel Comb will open, exposing the pink jelly flower at its core.
- Interact with the core to receive the Heat Tolerance Adaptation.
In total, you're destroying nine Bloom Cankers across three sites. It's a straightforward loop once you know the layout.
Clear the two smaller infestations before returning to the central site. The central Angel Comb won't open until both satellite sites are treated.
What can you do in the hot biome after unlocking Heat Tolerance?
With Heat Tolerance active, the hot biome opens up for proper exploration. The area is resource-rich, and players looking to progress into late-game crafting will find materials here they can't get elsewhere. Two resources worth prioritizing are Gold and Sulfur. For a breakdown of where Sulfur spawns specifically, the Subnautica 2 sulfur location guide covers exact spots and what you can craft with it.
Stay cautious around the thermal vents even with Heat Tolerance equipped. The adaptation raises your ceiling to 100 degrees, but direct contact with vents pushes temperatures beyond that and deals damage regardless.
