Tom Clancy's The Division 2 drops you into a post-pandemic Washington, D.C., seven months after a genetically engineered virus called Green Poison has collapsed the U.S. government. You play as a Strategic Homeland Division agent trying to stabilize the city against five warring factions. Developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, it launched in March 2019 as a cover-based third-person shooter with deep RPG progression, cooperative multiplayer for up to four players, and an endgame designed to keep you busy long after the campaign credits roll.

How does character progression work?

You start by creating a Division agent, choosing gender and appearance. As you complete missions and activities across the open-world D.C. map, you earn experience points and level up, gaining SHD Tech currency to unlock new skills. Those skills include deployable gun turrets, combat drones, shields, seeker mines, and chemical launchers, each with unique mods that change how they function.

Weapons are sorted into tiers and rarity levels. Higher-quality guns carry better stats and talents that boost your performance in specific ways. You can customize weapons further with optics, iron sights, and barrel attachments. Gear works similarly: wearing items from the same brand gives a small passive bonus, so paying attention to brand sets matters even before you hit the endgame.

Clans support up to 50 players, and individual member activity contributes to a shared clan XP pool that unlocks additional gameplay benefits for everyone in the group.

What happens when you reach level 30 and finish the campaign?

This is where The Division 2 really opens up. Finishing the main campaign at level 30 triggers the Black Tusk invasion, a technologically advanced private military faction that seizes D.C. landmarks and reactivates previously completed missions as harder "invaded" versions with tougher enemies and better loot.

Your character level gets replaced by Gear Score, calculated from the combined stats, attributes, and talents of all your equipped weapons and armor. The world divides into tiers, with each tier unlocked by completing invaded missions and reaching a sufficient Gear Score, then liberating a stronghold. There are 52 named bosses collectively called the Deck of 52, each dropping a collectible card on defeat.

You also unlock specializations, which are class paths that grant access to signature weapons. The three base specializations are:

  • Survivalist (crossbow)
  • Sharpshooter (TAC-50 anti-materiel sniper rifle)
  • Demolitionist (M32A1 grenade launcher)

Post-launch updates added the Gunner (minigun), Technician (missile launcher), and Firewall (flamethrower) specializations.

What are the Dark Zones?

The Division 2 has three Dark Zones located at Washington Union Station, the D.C. waterfront, and Georgetown. Each supports up to 12 players simultaneously and is designed around a different playstyle. On entering, your gear gets normalized so all players compete on roughly equal terms.

Loot inside Dark Zones comes in two types. Non-contaminated loot is yours the moment you pick it up. Contaminated loot requires helicopter extraction: you call in a chopper, defend the extraction point from AI enemies, and risk other players trying to steal your haul before it lifts off.

Going rogue happens when you break into a Dark Zone chest or steal a supply drop. Rogue players can attack others to steal loot and earn XP. Kill enough players and your status escalates to "disavowed," then to Manhunt Rogue, at which point a bounty goes up and every other agent in the zone has reason to hunt you down. You can clear rogue status by surviving long enough or using Thieves' Dens and Manhunt terminals.

The endgame unlocks Occupied Dark Zones, where gear normalization is off, friendly fire is active, enemies hit harder, and you get no warning when players turn rogue. It is a significantly more dangerous environment.

What PvP and co-op modes are available?

Beyond Dark Zones, The Division 2 has a dedicated competitive multiplayer mode called Conflict, which runs on standalone maps separate from the main open world. Conflict includes Skirmish (team deathmatch) and Domination modes.

On the cooperative side, several major modes have been added since launch:

  • The Summit (added September 2020): up to four players ascend a 100-floor skyscraper against escalating enemy forces.
  • Countdown (added May 2022 with Season 9): a four-player team must stabilize a failing nuclear power station within 15 minutes.
  • Descent (added April 2023): a roguelike-inspired mode where up to four players start with basic weapons and grow more powerful by acquiring talent points across a series of encounters.
  • Raids: eight-player extended combat challenges. The first raid, Operation Dark Hours, is set at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. A second raid, Operation Iron Horse, followed in June 2020.

How do settlements and the open world work?

Washington, D.C. functions as a full open world. You can liberate enemy control points, call in civilian reinforcements, stop public executions, intercept resource convoys, and hunt for collectibles including comms, relics, and Echoes. Discovering a safehouse reveals nearby SHD caches and additional fast travel points.

Settlements are civilian communities you support by completing missions and donating supplies. Recruiting NPCs through these settlements unlocks projects that reward gear, XP, and crafting blueprints. Upgrading settlements expands their facilities and gives you practical benefits like gear stash access and fast travel.

Weapon vendors accept trinkets and unwanted gear in exchange for E-credits, the in-game currency used for purchasing weapons, crafting materials, and cosmetic changes.

What expansions and seasonal content exist?

The Division 2 launched in 2019 and has been supported continuously since. The major content additions are:

  • Warlords of New York (March 2020): raised the level cap to 40, added a Lower Manhattan map, overhauled the gear system, introduced the Rikers and Cleaners factions, and closed the base game story arc. New players can access it directly as a level-30 character.
  • Battle for Brooklyn (May 27, 2025): added new missions and a Brooklyn map expansion covering Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo neighborhoods. Ubisoft designed it to be approachable for players who skipped Warlords of New York.

The game also runs 12-week seasonal manhunts with rotating targets and gameplay events. Support was originally planned to end in 2020, but the success of Warlords of New York prompted Massive and Ubisoft Bucharest to continue development well beyond that.

If you are working through the current Year 8 Season 1 content, the Manhunt Scout 1 walkthrough covers all three Scout objectives in Federal Triangle step by step.

How do I level up gear proficiency fast?

Gear progression does not stop at Gear Score. The game's Expertise system, introduced in Season 9, adds a proficiency layer on top of your standard gear. Modes like The Summit, Countdown, and the Tinkering Station are the most efficient ways to grind proficiency XP. For a focused breakdown of how to maximize gains during active XP events, the proficiency XP leveling guide walks through the fastest methods available in Y8S1.

What should new players focus on first?

Here is a practical priority order based on the game's structure:

  1. Complete main missions to unlock settlements and fast travel points across D.C.
  2. Upgrade at least one settlement to gain gear stash access early.
  3. Experiment with two or three skills before settling on a loadout style.
  4. Finish the campaign to trigger the Black Tusk invasion and access specializations.
  5. Work through invaded missions to raise your Gear Score and unlock higher world tiers.
  6. Try standard Dark Zones before attempting Occupied Dark Zones.
  7. Once comfortable with the endgame loop, explore Countdown and The Summit for targeted loot farming.

For everything else the game has to offer across seasons and events, the full Division 2 strategy guide collection has you covered with up-to-date content for active seasons, manhunts, and limited-time events.
