Polygon Releases $640 Million in Community Grants

Polygon has committed $640 million in community grants to fund blockchain development over the next decade. The allocation follows a community vote that unlocked the equivalent value in tokens, marking one of the largest sustained funding initiatives in the blockchain space.

One Billion Tokens

The initiative will distribute one billion POL tokens across ten years, releasing approximately 100 million POL each year. Season 01 kicks off with 35 million MATIC tokens—valued at $27 million—earmarked for projects building on the Polygon Layer 2 blockchain and the Ethereum ecosystem.

Community Treasury and Season 01 Funding

A newly formed Community Treasury, overseen by an independent Community Treasury Board, will manage the funds. The first season launches with 35 million MATIC distributed to approved projects, and applications are now live.

Grant Allocators will handle distribution of Season 01 funds through an open framework designed to reward builders contributing to Polygon's growth and success.

Focus on Innovation and Community Growth

Polygon's developer base has driven significant platform expansion through hackathons, accelerators, and global events. This funding program recognizes those contributions while pushing innovation forward across the ecosystem.

The Community Grants Program offers two distinct tracks for applicants:

  1. General Grant Track: Open to any Polygon-based project, prioritizing developer tools, protocol infrastructure, and decentralized applications (dApps).
  2. Consumer Crypto Track: Focused on projects accelerating crypto adoption through consumer-facing use cases, including gaming, gamified commerce, NFT innovations, and content co-creation.

Supporting Long-term Blockchain Development

The program targets projects either building natively on Polygon or migrating to the platform, with emphasis on sustained development and community governance. Past grant recipients like Quickswap, Keom, Jokerace, and Intraverse demonstrate the program's track record.

The funding structure aims to support critical early-stage development, giving teams runway to experiment and refine their ideas without immediate revenue pressure.

Polygon continues gathering community input on treasury deployment strategy. The goal is a developer-driven, community-governed network of chains powered by the creativity and technical work of its builder community. The Community Grants Program represents Polygon's commitment to long-term blockchain advancement through direct developer support.
