ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE launches with 34 playable aircraft across four distinct combat roles, and knowing which ones to prioritize from the start makes a real difference in how smoothly your campaign runs. From the free F/A-18C Hornet you get on day one to the 1,000,000 MRP X-40 Nightmare locked behind the final credits, every jet has a price, a path, and a purpose.
The base game holds 32 aircraft, with two bonus jets bringing the full playable roster to 34. Each plane falls into one of four roles, and the Aircraft Tree color-codes them by role so you can spot what a jet does before spending a single MRP.
The game also features non-playable aircraft including the A-50, E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, Tu-160 Blackjack, and the aerial warship Podarge. These appear as enemies, allies, or set pieces only.

Military Result Points (MRP) are the campaign currency you earn by destroying targets in completed sorties, both in the main campaign and Free Mission mode. The multiplier scales with difficulty: x0.8 on Casual, up to x1.5 on Ace. All purchases are permanent and carry across new campaign runs.
The Aircraft Tree connects planes, upgrade parts, and special weapons in a branching structure. Every node along a route must be purchased before the jet at the end of it unlocks, so you are also spending MRP on parts between aircraft, not just on the planes themselves.
For players looking to grind efficiently, check our complete mission list guide for the highest-payout sorties, including Mission 28, which offers the best MRP return in the game.
The 30 paid aircraft total 8,900,000 MRP before any upgrade parts or special weapons are factored in. Buying the entire tree unlocks the Patron of the Parts trophy, and earning 25,000,000 MRP lifetime across all playthroughs unlocks the MRP Aplenty trophy.
The F-35C Lightning II sits at the end of the multirole branch and costs 550,000 MRP on its own. The full route from the free F/A-18C Hornet runs through four aircraft purchases totaling 1,270,000 MRP, not counting the upgrade parts between nodes.
This route also sets you up for the X-40 Nightmare after the campaign, since the F-35C is one of the three 550,000 MRP jets that qualify as a prerequisite for the X-40.

ACE COMBAT 8 Guide: All Aircraft & How to Unlock Them
All three of ACE COMBAT 8's original superfighters are locked until you complete Mission 30, "Song of Wings." After the credits roll, they appear on the Aircraft Tree as the most expensive purchases available.
The X-40 has an extra gate beyond finishing the campaign. You must already own the F-22A Raptor, F-35C Lightning II, or Su-57 Felon before the purchase unlocks. Picking up one of those 550,000 MRP jets during your first campaign run is the smart way to stay on track.
For a deeper look at S-Rank strategies and optimal loadouts for these endgame jets, the S-Ranks and loadouts guide covers what each superfighter does best in Free Mission.
These two aircraft bypass the MRP tree entirely.
The F-14A Tomcat is the pre-order bonus for every edition of ACE COMBAT 8, bundled with ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR. It is a long-range missile fighter and the original model that the F-14D Super Tomcat (available on the tree for 90,000 MRP) is based on. Pre-order owners get it in their campaign hangar from the start.
The ADFX-02 Morgan -PIXY- comes from the Season 1 Premium Ace Pass in Ace Combat Online. The Deluxe Edition of the game includes a Premium Ace Pass Plus voucher that is not tied to Season 1, meaning you can redeem it later. Once Season 1 ends, the Morgan becomes available as standalone DLC. For a full breakdown of every reward on the pass, the Season One Ace Pass guide has everything mapped out.
One important detail: owning the Morgan does not drop it into your campaign hangar immediately. It only becomes usable in the campaign after completing every mission, placing it firmly in post-game territory alongside the FA-36 and X-40.
Most of the roster requires MRP, but two jets cost nothing at all.
The A-6E is a capable attacker for ground-strike missions and saves you the 90,000 MRP you would otherwise spend on the Su-25SM Frogfoot at that stage of the game.
For everything else you need before and after launch, the full ACE COMBAT 8 strategy guide collection covers PC settings, combat tactics, and the complete mission list in one place.
