Playing Gibraltar in Apex Legends ...

Who is Gibraltar in Apex Legends?

Makoa Gibraltar is one of Apex Legends' original Support Legends, unlocked from the start without spending any tokens. Standing 6'5" and weighing 292 lbs, he has the biggest hitbox in the game, but his abilities compensate for that disadvantage. Gibraltar spent multiple seasons as a low-pick Legend before receiving major buffs in Season 28 Split 2 that elevated him back into competitive viability. His Dome of Protection tactical now stuns enemies attempting to push through it, and his Defensive Bombardment ultimate received three charges, transforming him into one of the strongest area-denial tools in the current patch.

What are Gibraltar's abilities?

Mastering each ability individually is essential. Understanding how they synergize is what separates competent Gibraltar players from dominant ones.

Gun Shield (Passive)

Whenever you aim down sights, a 50 HP energy shield deploys in front of Gibraltar's torso. It absorbs damage, deflects Arc Stars, and recharges after 9 seconds once depleted. The shield's health displays on both sides of your screen during ADS, giving you constant awareness of your remaining protection.

Any damage exceeding the shield's 50 HP capacity passes through to Gibraltar's health pool directly, so don't rely on it during extended engagements. Seer's Focus of Attention tactical disables the shield completely, a critical interaction to remember in ranked matches.

info
Crouching with the Gun Shield active significantly reduces your frontal damage profile. Paired with a Red Evo Shield and the Fortified perk, you become exceptionally tanky in straight-up gunfights.

The shield emits a visible glow that can reveal your location when concealed. Toggle it off using H on PC or Down on console when stealth matters.

Dome of Protection (Tactical)

Gibraltar deploys a disc that generates a 6-meter radius half-dome lasting 12 seconds with a 13-second cooldown. The barrier blocks all projectiles and bullets traveling through it from either direction. Players can freely walk through the dome, which creates both tactical opportunities and vulnerabilities.

The most undervalued aspect: Gibraltar revives downed allies 33% faster inside the dome, reducing the standard 6-second revive to approximately 4.5 seconds. That speed difference wins contested fights.

Two Legend Upgrades alter this ability at Level 3:

  • Baby Bubble: Smaller dome with cooldown reduced to 12 seconds
  • Bubble Bunker: Standard dome with duration extended to 16 seconds

Baby Bubble typically performs better in ranked due to faster cooldown cycling providing more frequent protection windows. Bubble Bunker excels in deliberate late-game circles where extended cover duration matters more than frequency.

warning
The dome provides no protection from enemies walking inside to shoot you at close range. Grenades thrown into the dome still explode and deal full damage. Treat it as temporary cover, not invulnerability.

Defensive Bombardment (Ultimate)

Gibraltar throws a smoke canister marking a 24-meter radius for concentrated artillery fire. Mortar shells rain down for 6 seconds, each dealing 40 damage while inflicting shell-shock on anyone caught in the strike zone. The ultimate charges in 3 minutes, but Season 28 Split 2 added three charges total, dramatically increasing its tactical flexibility for both offense and area denial.

danger
The bombardment damages Gibraltar and his team. Deploy it at your position's edge, not centered on your squad. Wattson's Interception Pylon destroys both the mortar shells and the initial smoke marker, so eliminate any active Pylon before calling the strike.

The optimal combination: call the bombardment, then immediately deploy Dome of Protection just behind the strike zone's edge. Enemies must either absorb mortar damage or push through your dome into your waiting squad. Both choices favor you.

Fortified (Passive Perk)

Fortified reduces incoming damage by 15% (headshots excluded) and grants complete immunity to bullet slowdown effects. Practically, that 15% reduction equals surviving approximately one additional shot in most engagements. While not overwhelming alone, combined with Gun Shield and upgraded Evo Shields, the total damage mitigation becomes substantial.

A persistent bug: Gibraltar receives unexpectedly high grenade damage when wearing Body Shields or Evo Shields. This unintended interaction has survived multiple patches.

How does Gibraltar's kit work together?

Gibraltar's true strength emerges from chaining his abilities sequentially rather than using them in isolation.

Dome-dancing deserves dedicated practice. Moving in and out of the dome while under fire forces enemies to waste ammunition during your transitions. Time your exits when enemies reload and you'll win trades that should favor them.

What's the best team comp for Gibraltar?

Gibraltar's defensive toolkit synergizes best with Legends who can force enemies into bombardment zones or who benefit from dome coverage.

Bangalore forms the strongest pairing. Her Smoke Launcher layered with Gibraltar's bombardment creates overlapping denial zones nearly impossible to push without Bloodhound's scan. Running both ultimates simultaneously produces one of the most oppressive combinations in current meta play.

Wattson fits naturally on defense-focused squads. Her Interception Pylon recharges shields inside Gibraltar's dome and intercepts incoming ordnance, though it also destroys Gibraltar's bombardment if positioned carelessly. Coordinate placement deliberately. Season 28 Split 2 gave Wattson's Pylon the ability to reinforce and repair Hardlight meshes, strengthening her defensive synergy with Gibraltar.

Bloodhound completes the composition effectively. Their Beast of the Hunt ultimate combines with Gibraltar's zoning to create push-pull pressure: Gibraltar forces enemies from cover, Bloodhound hunts them with enhanced movement and threat vision.

info
Gibraltar has a second passive called Momentum Boost. After maintaining maximum sprint speed for two seconds, he gains additional speed and can break doors in one hit. This makes him less immobile than his hitbox suggests.

Tips for playing Gibraltar at a higher level

  • Disable the Gun Shield when hiding. The glow reveals your position around corners and through gaps. Toggle it off when holding angles without being spotted.
  • Throw the dome at range. The disc travels considerable distance. You don't need to stand on the location you want covered.
  • Use the dome as bait. Enemies frequently rush domes expecting to interrupt revives. Drop it empty, position outside, and punish the aggressive push.
  • Prioritize sniper loadouts. The Gun Shield provides Gibraltar a tangible advantage in long-range duels that most Legends lack. Snipers and marksman rifles leverage this strength directly.
  • Don't hoard the bombardment. Three charges eliminate any reason to save it. Use it aggressively for zoning, not exclusively as a panic option.

After extensive testing in both ranked and unranked modes, the most common mistake is treating the dome as permanent sanctuary rather than a 12-second window to execute one specific action: a revive, a heal, a reload, or an escape. Players who respect that time constraint use the dome far more effectively than those who camp inside it.
