Introduction

Battlefield V drops players into the most destructive conflict in human history with a scale that few shooters can match. Grand Operations pit squads across multi-day campaigns, while War Stories put a human face on lesser-known fronts. Whether the draw is 64-player multiplayer chaos or the quieter tension of a resistance fighter in occupied Norway, DICE's WWII shooter has a mode built for it.

Overview

Battlefield V is a first-person shooter developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts, set against the backdrop of World War II. Released in its most complete form as the Definitive Edition, it packages every weapon, vehicle, gadget, Elite, and cosmetic from launch through Year 2 into a single package. The result is a WWII sandbox with more moving parts than most shooters ever attempt.

The game runs across multiple platforms including PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, supporting up to 64 players in online multiplayer. Its ESRB Mature rating reflects the subject matter honestly: this is a game about war, and it doesn't soften the edges.

Gameplay and mechanics

At its core, Battlefield V is built around squad cooperation. Lone-wolf play is possible, but the game actively discourages it through resource scarcity and a revive system that rewards staying close to teammates. Key mechanics include:

  • Squad-based revives and resupply
  • Fortification building for defensive positions
  • Class-specific roles (Assault, Medic, Support, Recon)
  • Combined arms combat across infantry, tanks, and aircraft
  • Attrition system limiting ammunition and health regeneration

The attrition system is the most divisive design choice in the game. Ammo doesn't replenish automatically, and health doesn't fully regenerate without a medic or supply station. It forces players to think tactically rather than just sprinting from objective to objective.

What makes Grand Operations different from standard multiplayer?

Grand Operations is Battlefield V's answer to the question of how to make multiplayer feel consequential. Instead of isolated matches, Grand Operations strings together multiple rounds across several in-game days, simulating a wartime offensive. The outcome of one round carries meaningful weight into the next, with the losing team starting subsequent rounds at a disadvantage. If the campaign reaches a final day without a decisive winner, a Last Stand mode strips players down to a single life and a pistol. Few multiplayer modes in any shooter commit that hard to the concept of momentum.

Firestorm, the game's battle royale mode, offers a different pace entirely. Squads of up to four players compete across a shrinking map with vehicle drops and fortifiable positions adding a layer of strategy absent from most battle royale titles.

World and setting

The War Stories campaign is where Battlefield V earns genuine respect. Rather than following a single Allied protagonist through the greatest hits of WWII history, DICE constructed four standalone episodes set on fronts that rarely get screen time. A Norwegian resistance fighter sabotages a German nuclear program. A British convict turned special operations soldier raids airfields in North Africa. Senegalese colonial soldiers fight for a France that openly discriminates against them. A German Tiger tank commander defends Cologne in the war's final days as his crew falls apart.

Each story runs two to three hours and plays differently from the others. The Norway chapter leans into stealth. The North Africa episode is a chaotic vehicle-heavy raid. The Senegalese story is the most emotionally grounded of the four. Peter Muller's chapter is the most uncomfortable, asking the player to inhabit a soldier fighting for a losing, criminal regime with no easy moral exit.

Content and replayability

The Definitive Edition represents the fullest version of Battlefield V available. All post-launch maps, weapons, and game modes are included, along with 84 outfit variations for British and German forces, 8 Year 2 soldier outfits, and 33 Chapter Reward items from Year 1. The Company system lets players customize soldiers and vehicles with unlocked gear, giving long-term play a visible progression track. For a game set in WWII, the sheer volume of confirmed, playable content makes the Definitive Edition the only version worth picking up.
