Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026, and for most players it is essentially a clean slate. Weapons, Operators, camos, and Blueprints earned in Black Ops 7 and earlier titles stay behind when you load into multiplayer or DMZ. Warzone operates under a separate, more generous set of rules when it integrates with MW4 at the start of Season 1 on November 6. Here is a complete breakdown of what moves with you, what stays behind, and what the restrictions look like in practice.
What actually carries over to Modern Warfare 4?
The short answer is: not much, and that is by design. Infinity Ward built MW4 around a fresh weapon pool, so no guns, Operator unlocks, or camo progress from previous titles transfers into multiplayer or DMZ. What does come with you is a short list of cosmetics and currencies.
Currencies and tokens
COD Points carry over on the same platform where you purchased them. Buy on Xbox, spend on Xbox. If you switch platforms, the balance does not follow you automatically, though you can still access it through the Call of Duty web store. Double XP Tokens also transfer, covering Level, Weapon, and Battle Pass variants. One important change: tokens now only count down while you are actively in a match. Time spent sitting in menus no longer burns through them.
Pre-order and beta cosmetics
Three cosmetic categories make the jump into MW4 multiplayer:
- MW4 Beta Rewards (cosmetics only; beta rank and weapon levels were reset)
- Hunter Killer Operator Skin (exclusive to players who pre-ordered MW4)
- Moonlit Pearl and Gilded Ruin Camos (tied to the MW4 pre-order and a Black Ops 7 challenge completion reward)
If you earned beta rewards during the test period and want to know exactly what unlocked, the MW4 beta rewards guide covers every cosmetic ranked by level alongside challenge unlocks.
What carries over to Warzone in Season 1?
Warzone's integration with Modern Warfare 4 happens with Season 1 on November 6, and the rules here are noticeably different. Legacy content from Modern Warfare II through Black Ops 7 survives the transition, but with significant restrictions on customization.
Legacy weapons and Blueprints
All weapons from the legacy era (Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7) appear in a dedicated Legacy tab in the Loadout menu. The key restrictions:
- Gunsmith is disabled for all legacy weapons and legacy Blueprints
- Old Custom Loadouts built around those weapons are not supported
- Each legacy base weapon gets a fixed preset build with five attachments, unlocked through the Armory
- Legacy Blueprints retain their existing attachment configurations and function as locked builds
Activision's stated goal is a weapon meta rooted in MW4 while keeping older guns available for players who want them. In practice, only MW4 weapons can be fully tuned and customized. Your old loadouts remain usable but are frozen as-is.
Legacy Operators and the skin toggle
Operators and Operator Skins from the same four legacy titles remain usable in Warzone. Season 1 also introduces an Operator Skin toggle, a Warzone-exclusive setting that lets you control what you see on your screen.
With the toggle enabled, every Operator from a non-MW4 title displays as a standard Modern Warfare 4 Operator on your end. This applies to opponents, party members, and squadmates in both lobbies and matches. Your own selected Operator stays unchanged for you personally. The toggle is all-or-nothing, meaning you cannot selectively hide only certain skins. It starts off by default, so you need to turn it on manually if you want the visual consistency.

What does not carry forward at all?
Legacy camos are the one major category that disappears entirely, in both MW4 and Warzone. This includes mastery camos unlocked in Black Ops 7 and earlier games. Activision initially indicated camos would carry over to Warzone, then corrected that statement and clarified that only Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapon Blueprints qualify as legacy cosmetics that survive the transition. If camo grinding is your focus, the MW4 mastery camo guide covers every unlock path across multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone for the new title.
For MW4 multiplayer and DMZ specifically, the exclusion list is much broader. Everything not named in the carry forward list above stays in the game where you earned or bought it. That covers all older weapons and their progression, Blueprints, unlocked camos, and every Operator except Hunter Killer. Those items remain accessible in their original titles.
How to check your carry forward items
On launch day, navigate to the available tokens screen inside Modern Warfare 4. Your Level, Weapon, and Battle Pass tokens should appear there, and your COD Points balance should match what you hold on the same platform. Once Season 1 begins in Warzone, the Legacy tab in the Loadout menu is where all your older weapons and their fixed Blueprint builds are stored. The Operator Skin toggle is also available from that point, but you have to activate it manually.
