The Contradiction quest is one of Crimson Desert's more unusual missions. Instead of swinging a sword, you're sitting across from the Institute Steward in Scholastone's main library, recalling testimony from a handful of suspects. Get one answer wrong and you're sent back to the very beginning. No partial credit, no second chances on individual questions.
Here's everything you need to nail all 5 questions and track down the real thief.
Where does Contradiction fit in the questline?
Contradiction is part of the Weight of Knowledge questline, which falls under the Hernand Commissions Faction quests. According to TheGamer's walkthrough, you unlock this questline by progressing the story until you reach the Scholastone Institute, located in southwestern Hernand just west of The Witchwoods.
The sequence runs like this:
- Accept and complete The Missing Forbidden Book
- Complete the Investigation quest by questioning all suspects
- Contradiction begins automatically once the last suspect has been interviewed
danger
You cannot start Contradiction out of order. It triggers immediately after you finish the Investigation quest, so there's no way to miss it as long as you've completed the prior steps.

The Steward awaits your answers
What are the correct answers to the Steward's questions?
Head back to the main library area in Scholastone and interact with the Institute Steward. He'll walk through the suspect testimonies one by one and ask for your input on 5 specific points. Both Polygon and TheGamer confirm the same answers, so the table below is reliable.
warning
A single wrong answer resets the entire questionnaire. You cannot correct individual responses mid-conversation, so read the full answer text carefully before confirming each selection.
Once all 5 answers are submitted correctly, the Steward draws his own conclusion using information you didn't provide. The quest objective then updates and points you toward the archive to apprehend the culprit.
How to catch the culprit after the questioning
The Steward sends you to the archive without naming who you're after, but once you arrive, the suspect reveals himself: the thief is Javier. A cutscene plays showing him in the middle of completing a deal for the stolen book.
After the scene ends, you automatically tackle Javier. From there:
- Tie him up as you would with a standard bounty target
- Carry him to the plaza in front of the archive entrance, near the horse statue
- Deliver him to the orc scholar marked on your map
info
The delivery point is just outside the archive entrance by the horse statue, not inside the building. If your map marker seems unclear, look for the plaza area rather than heading back into the library.
What reward do you get for completing Contradiction?
Finishing the quest earns you the Kinetic Dolphin Family Statue, a decoration item for your camp. According to both Polygon and TheGamer, it sells for 39 silver if you'd rather have the coin than a dolphin on your shelf. It's not a gear upgrade, but it closes out this chapter of the Weight of Knowledge questline and opens the path forward.
Why does the quest punish wrong answers so harshly?
The reset mechanic exists because Contradiction is built around the idea that you were paying attention during the Investigation quest. The suspect dialogue contains the clues, and the steward's questions test whether you caught the details or skimmed past them. Getting sent back to the start is the game's way of saying the testimony actually mattered.
That said, if you didn't absorb every line of dialogue, the answer table above has you covered. The phrasing of each correct answer is specific enough that guessing from memory alone is genuinely risky, particularly the question about Raphael's missing library record, which relies on a detail that's easy to overlook.
info
The Steward's final conclusion is based on his own knowledge, not on anything you told him. Your 5 answers simply confirm the testimonies. The actual deduction about who did it happens off your input entirely.
