Crimson Desert Guide: How to Complete Sport Hunter Quest

The Sport Hunter quest in Crimson Desert is one of the few quests that rewards you with both a boss fight and a rare mount unlock. Head to northwestern Pailune, track down Moren, the Mistwood Huntmaster, survive his ambushes, and you walk away with the Ibex as a rideable mount. Here's exactly how to do it.

How do you start the Sport Hunter quest?

The quest begins at a map marker northwest of the Wayward Woods in Hernand. Travel to that location to trigger the search for Moren.

Once you arrive, pull out your lantern and sweep the area with it. A golden trail will appear, pointing you in the direction Moren is traveling. Follow it immediately, because Moren is moving and the trail is your only reliable way to intercept him.

warning
Disguised Mistwood Hunters are scattered along the trail, set up as ambushes. Expect multiple surprise attacks before you reach Moren. Clear them fast and keep moving.

How to track Moren, the Mistwood Huntmaster

Moren follows a fixed roaming route, so speed matters here. Run the golden trail as quickly as possible to cut him off before he moves out of range. If you stop to fight every ambush at full length, you risk losing the trail entirely.

The disguised hunters along the path are not particularly difficult individually, but they attack in groups. Prioritize fast kills and keep your health topped up before you reach Moren.

How to defeat Moren, the Huntmaster

When you finally intercept Moren, he rides his Ibex into the fight and uses the creature to deliver powerful kicks. Before you focus on Moren himself, clear the group of hunters that accompanies him. Fighting the boss while his allies chip away at you is the fastest way to lose the encounter.

Once the hunters are down, deplete Moren's blue health bar. He won't go down here. Instead, he flees, and you have to track him down a second time using the same lantern method.

info
Burn through the escort hunters as quickly as possible before committing to the boss. Moren's Ibex kicks are manageable one-on-one, but they hurt when you're already taking hits from multiple directions.

Phase two: what changes?

Phase two starts when you catch up to Moren after his escape. This version of the fight is more demanding because Moren switches between fighting mounted on the Ibex and fighting on foot. Keep track of his position at all times.

The mounted form is the easier target. His attacks are less powerful when he's on the Ibex, so try to engage him there rather than waiting for him to dismount.

A bow and arrow build works well here, letting you deal consistent ranged damage regardless of whether Moren is mounted or on foot. Staying mobile and circling your target reduces the risk of eating a full combo from either form.

danger
In phase two, losing sight of Moren when he dismounts is the most common reason players take unnecessary damage. Keep the camera adjusted so you always know whether he's on the Ibex or standing.

What rewards do you get for defeating Moren?

After Moren goes down in phase two, you receive two items:

  • Abyss Artifact
  • Icicle Edge Alpine Ibex Horns

The Icicle Edge Alpine Ibex Horns are the key reward. Take them to any witch and exchange them to unlock the ability to summon the Ibex as a mount. Completing this quest also finishes the Fog over the Forest quest chain for the Longleaf Tribe.

The Ibex is one of the more distinctive mounts in the game, and getting it through an actual boss hunt rather than a shop makes it worth the effort. If you're building out your mount collection alongside other progression goals, check out our guide on getting the Riding Outfit for Horse EXP bonuses to make the most of your stable.

For players who want to keep pushing through Crimson Desert's quest content after finishing the Sport Hunter, the Crimson Desert guides collection covers everything from Abyss Artifact hunting to individual quest walkthroughs. The Pursuit Beyond the Veil walkthrough is worth checking out next if you're working through the main mission chain, and if you're still building up your weapon options, the Hound Sword quest guide covers Fort Hellwood step by step.
