Crimson Desert Guide: How to Destroy Thorns

Thorns in Crimson Desert are more than just scenery. They guard paths to some of the game's most rewarding locations, and until you know how to clear them, they're a hard stop. The good news: fire solves everything. Two methods work reliably, and one of them you already have from the opening hours of the game.

Why do thorns block your path in Crimson Desert?

Thorns function the same way vines do in Crimson Desert, they're environmental obstacles placed by Pearl Abyss to gate off areas until you have the right tools. They can't be cut down with normal attacks. Fire is the only thing that clears them, and the game gives you two ways to apply it.

How to destroy thorns using Blinding Flash

Blinding Flash is the faster and more reliable of the two methods. You don't need to find any resources, and it works anywhere on the map. Here's how to trigger it:

On PC:

  1. Equip your sword first. Blinding Flash only activates with the sword drawn.
  2. Press and hold Ctrl + LMB simultaneously to enter the activated stance.
  3. Release Ctrl, then hold it again to fire the beam.

On console:

  1. Hold RB/R1 and LB/L1 together to enter the stance.
  2. Release RB/R1, then hold it again to release the flash.

The skill projects an intense beam of focused light that sets thorns ablaze on contact. Wait a few seconds after the fire catches and the thorns burn away completely, leaving the path open.

How to destroy thorns using fire arrows

Fire arrows are the alternative if you're not running a sword build, though they require a bit more setup. Here's the process:

  1. Collect standard wooden arrows from enemies, vendors, or crafting. These are common drops and easy to stock up on.
  2. Find a fire source in the environment, such as a torch, campfire, or brazier.
  3. Draw your bow and position the arrow tip into the flame. The arrow will ignite.
  4. Aim at the thorn cluster and shoot. The fire spreads on impact and burns the thorns down.

What's behind the thorns worth clearing?

Thorns typically block access to high-value areas: treasure caches, puzzle rooms like the Spire of Insight, and doors that require environmental interaction to open. Clearing them isn't optional if you want full exploration coverage. The effort is minimal once you have Blinding Flash, so there's no reason to leave any thorn cluster standing.
