Crimson Desert review

Most players spent their first dozen hours in Crimson Desert thinking character switching was the whole story. Hold the directional button, swap to a different fighter, carry on. What a huge chunk of the player base missed, and what a Reddit user named bbq_R0ADK1LL brought to light shortly after launch, is that you can actually bring Damiane along as a persistent companion rather than just swapping between characters GTA-style. The tag team system is a genuinely useful mechanic that Pearl Abyss never spelled out clearly, and it changes how you approach open-world exploration entirely.

How does the tag team mechanic work in Crimson Desert?

The setup is straightforward once you know where to look. Hold the up directional button to open the character selection menu, but instead of tapping to switch, look for the Summon option. Select it, and your companion will appear in the world beside you.

Once they've spawned in, you'll notice a Gather prompt on the right side of your screen. Hold the Menu button to group your party together. That's it. You now have an active companion running alongside Kliff rather than sitting on standby waiting for a swap.

What can your companion actually do?

Having Damiane in the party isn't the same as playing co-op with another human. Her AI has real limitations worth understanding before you start relying on her in tougher encounters.

  • She mounts her horse automatically when Kliff gets on his, keeping pace during open-world travel
  • She teleports to stay near you when terrain or distance creates gaps, similar to how a pet behaves
  • She contributes meaningfully in fights against large bandit camps and mob-heavy areas
  • You cannot switch between characters during active combat
  • You can switch freely without a loading screen while roaming the open world

The combat switching restriction is worth noting. If you want to play as Damiane mid-fight, you'll need to wait until the engagement ends. During exploration, though, swapping is fast and loading-screen-free.

Where does the tag team system work, and where doesn't it?

The feature has a clear boundary that the game doesn't explain well. Main story quests are built exclusively around Kliff, so you cannot bring a companion into those missions. The tag team option simply won't be available during main quest sequences.

Everything outside of that is fair game. Side content, bandit camp clearing, world exploration, and general adventuring all support the grouped party format. Players on the Crimson Desert subreddit specifically highlighted how much easier large bandit camps become with an extra fighter absorbing attention and dealing damage.

What this tells you about Crimson Desert's design

The tag team mechanic being buried this deep isn't an accident. Crimson Desert is a game built for players who poke at its edges. The open world contains fishing, hunting, cooking, crafting, large-scale boss encounters, and now a companion system that most people found out about from a Reddit post rather than the game itself. Pearl Abyss designed the experience to reward curiosity, sometimes at the cost of clarity.
