Fallout 76 Guide: All Axolotl of the Month Locations

Bethesda added axolotls to Fallout 76 as part of the Gone Fission update in June 2025, which also introduced fishing to Appalachia for the first time. These aren't just decorative catches: each month, a new limited-time axolotl appears in specific regions of the map, and you only have a few weeks to land one before it rotates out. Miss the window, and you could be waiting months for a second shot.

What is the Axolotl of the Month?

Every month, Bethesda cycles in a new rare axolotl variant tied to specific regions of Appalachia. The current axolotl is the Purple Axolotl, available from May 5 through June 2. You can fish for it in Skyline Valley and Cranberry Bog.

The rotation continues well into 2027. Here's the full schedule based on current information:

How do you catch an Axolotl in Fallout 76?

The core mechanic is straightforward: fish in the correct region during the right month. But your catch rate varies significantly depending on two factors: weather conditions and bait quality.

Fishing in rainy conditions with super bait gives you roughly a 30% better chance of catching an axolotl compared to any other combination. That's a meaningful edge when you're chasing a rare monthly variant.

Here's how the bait tiers break down:

  • Super bait + rain: Best possible catch rate, approximately 30% better than baseline
  • Improved bait + rain: Around 5% better than baseline
  • Common bait + rain: No meaningful benefit over dry conditions

What bait should you use, and where do you get it?

Bait tier matters more than most players realize when they first start fishing. Here's where to source each type:

Common bait

You can pick up common bait from two vendors: The Fisherman and Raymond Clark. Completing the Casting Off mission or the Big Fish in a Small Pond quest also rewards it. Common bait also turns up in containers scattered across Appalachia, so you'll likely accumulate some passively.

Improved bait

Improved bait comes from the same quests (Casting Off and Big Fish in a Small Pond) and drops from completing any public event. It can also appear in containers, though at a lower rate than common bait.

Super bait

This is the tier you want for serious axolotl hunting. Super bait requires either progressing through the seasons board or purchasing it directly from the Atomic Shop. It's the most effort to obtain, but the 30% catch rate improvement makes it worth prioritizing if you're targeting a specific monthly variant.

Which axolotl locations appear most often?

Looking at the full schedule, some regions show up repeatedly while others are more rare. Toxic Valley appears across four separate months (Banded, Shadow, Spotted, Stone, Clay), making it one of the most active fishing regions in the rotation. The Mire covers three months (Banded, Striped, Dotted), and Cranberry Bog appears in three as well (Purple, Speckled, Pink).

Burning Springs is the most limited region in the schedule, appearing only for the Charcoal and Dotted axolotls in January and April 2027 respectively. If those are on your list, plan ahead.

Is it worth chasing every axolotl?

That depends on how much you enjoy collection gameplay. The axolotls are rare, limited-time catches with no announced in-game utility beyond the collect-and-display appeal. But given that missing one means waiting through a full annual rotation, the time pressure is real for completionists.

The practical advice: prioritize getting super bait through the seasons board before your target month arrives, check the weather before committing to a long fishing session, and fish in both listed regions to maximize your exposure. The 30% improvement from optimal conditions is too large to ignore.

And if you're newer to the RPG genre and still finding your footing in Appalachia, starting with the fundamentals will make the fishing grind considerably less frustrating.
