Introduction

Far Cry 4 drops you into Kyrat, a fictional Himalayan kingdom ruled by the flamboyant and brutal Pagan Min, with nothing but a dying wish and a growing rebellion to guide you. This open-world shooter layers a dense action-adventure campaign over one of the most geographically varied settings in the series, mixing guerrilla combat, wildlife encounters, and co-op chaos into something that still holds up more than a decade after its 2014 release.

Overview

Far Cry 4 is an open-world first-person shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal and released in November 2014. Players take on the role of Ajay Ghale, a young man who returns to the fictional Himalayan nation of Kyrat to scatter his mother's ashes, only to find himself pulled into a civil war against Pagan Min, one of gaming's most memorable antagonists. The story threads together political intrigue, family history, and guerrilla warfare across a map that spans lush valleys, fortified outposts, and snowcapped mountain peaks.

What separates Kyrat from earlier Far Cry settings is sheer vertical range. The terrain shifts from dense subtropical forests in the south to frozen high-altitude passes in the north, and the game's systems are built around that contrast. Enemies behave differently at altitude, wildlife is more aggressive in certain biomes, and some missions are simply inaccessible until you have the right gear or vehicle. The world feels like it has rules, and learning them is half the fun.

Pagan Min himself deserves mention. Voiced by Troy Baker, he appears throughout the campaign with a charisma that makes him feel more like a deranged uncle than a standard-issue villain. The writing around him is uneven in places, but the character sticks with you in a way that few open-world antagonists manage.

Gameplay and mechanics

The core loop in Far Cry 4 will feel immediately familiar to anyone who played Far Cry 3, and that is not entirely a criticism. Capturing outposts, hunting animals to craft gear upgrades, and stacking skill points across two separate upgrade trees (one for Amita's faction, one for Sabal's) gives the campaign a satisfying sense of forward momentum.

Key mechanics include:

  • Outpost and fortress liberation
  • Animal hunting for crafting materials
  • Gyrocopter and wingsuit traversal
  • Elephant-mounted combat
  • Two-faction story choices that affect mission outcomes

The gyrocopter is a genuine quality-of-life addition. Scouting a fortress from the air before rappelling down in a wingsuit turns what could be a repetitive mission type into something that rewards planning. Riding an elephant into a group of soldiers never stops being entertaining, even if it is more spectacle than strategy.

What does co-op look like in Far Cry 4?

Far Cry 4 supports drop-in, drop-out co-op for up to two players. A friend can join your session at any point and help clear outposts, tackle side missions, or simply cause chaos in the open world. The host's progression carries over; the joining player keeps any experience and currency earned during the session. It is a low-friction system that adds a lot of replay value without requiring coordination ahead of time.

One notable detail: players without a copy of the game can be invited to join a session for a limited time, which made the feature more accessible at launch and still applies today.

World and setting

Kyrat is the most geographically ambitious setting in the Far Cry series up to this point. The southern regions feel almost tropical, packed with rivers, wildlife, and enemy patrols. The northern Himalayas introduce a harsher environment where yetis are rumored (and confirmed in the Valley of the Yetis DLC), visibility drops in blizzards, and the pace of the game slows considerably.

The wildlife system is one of the game's unsung strengths. Leopards, honey badgers, rhinos, eagles, and wolves all occupy specific areas and behave with enough aggression to keep exploration tense. A hunting trip can turn into a full emergency in seconds, and the game leans into that unpredictability without apology.

Multiplayer and social features

Beyond co-op, Far Cry 4 includes a competitive multiplayer mode called Battles of Kyrat, which pits the Golden Path rebels against Pagan Min's Royal Guard in asymmetric game modes. The modes include Outpost, Demon Mask, and Propaganda, each with distinct objectives. Competitive multiplayer has quieter servers now than at launch, but the co-op experience remains the more durable draw for players returning to the game today.

The map editor, a Far Cry series staple, returns with expanded tools that let players build and share custom maps across platforms. It adds a layer of community-driven content that extends the game's lifespan well beyond the main campaign's roughly 35-hour completion window.
