Overview

Frostpunk is a society survival game built around a single, brutal premise: a frozen world has ended civilization, and one coal-powered generator stands between your people and extinction. Released in April 2018 by 11 bit studios, the team behind This War of Mine, it earned an 84 on Metacritic and established itself as one of the more morally demanding strategy games of its era. Managing New London means balancing coal supplies and heating ranges while simultaneously deciding whether child labor, extended work shifts, or authoritarian crackdowns are prices worth paying for survival.

The tension between efficiency and ethics is where Frostpunk does its best work. Resource management pulls in one direction, and the needs of your citizens pull in another. A worker falls ill, a faction demands political representation, a blizzard is 48 hours away, and the coal stockpile is already thin. Every decision compounds. Small calls accumulate into a society that either reflects your values or quietly stopped doing so ten laws ago.

Gameplay and mechanics

The core gameplay loop centers on the generator, city construction radiating outward from it, and a technology tree that unlocks steam hubs, automatons, and eventually airships. Key systems include:

  • Laws passed through the Book of Laws, covering healthcare, food, and labor
  • Temperature management across heating zones and weather events
  • Scout expeditions into the Frostland for supplies and survivors
  • Hope and Discontent meters that determine whether your people follow or overthrow you
  • A tech tree unlocking steam-powered infrastructure and automatons

The law system deserves particular attention. Signing off on child labor or faith-based propaganda delivers short-term stability at a long-term moral cost. Reversing course is rarely an option. The game tracks what kind of ruler you are, and the ending you receive reflects it.

What does Endless Mode add to Frostpunk?

Beyond the main campaign scenarios, Endless Mode offers 8 maps with distinct terrain and weather patterns across three sub-modes. Endurance tests pure survival skills under maximum pressure. Builders removes the starting generator entirely, forcing an alternative approach to heat and infrastructure. Serenity strips away the existential threat and lets the city-building breathe without a countdown looming overhead. The Fall of Winterhome scenario, added post-launch and free for all owners, expands the lore by letting players experience the collapse of a city that couldn't hold together.

Content and replayability

Three paid expansions, bundled in the Season Pass, add new scenarios, mechanics, and story threads that extend the base game considerably. Post-launch free updates also introduced photo mode and the ability to name individual citizens and automatons, a small touch that makes the inevitable losses hit harder. The game is available on Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox, iOS, and Android, with the console edition holding a 4.59 rating from over 6,500 PlayStation Store reviews.

Impact and legacy

Frostpunk arrived as a genuine argument that city-builders could carry moral weight without sacrificing mechanical depth. The society survival genre it helped define asks questions that most strategy games avoid: not just whether you can win, but what winning costs and who paid for it. With three expansions, a free Endless Mode, and years of post-launch support behind it, the original game remains a dense, replayable experience that rewards replays specifically because different players draw different lines in different places.
