Guild of Guardians Review

Introduction

Guild of Guardians is a mobile roguelite squad RPG that blends dungeon crawling with strategic team-based combat. Players build squads of Guardians, battle through dungeons, and level up their team using a mix of merging, crafting, and trading. The game leans into play-and-earn mechanics, letting players collect in-game assets, NFTs, and tokens as they progress. Built on Immutable, it offers fast transactions and true asset ownership, while Immutable Passport makes logging in seamless with passwordless sign-on and automatic wallet creation.

Gameplay

Guild of Guardians' core gameplay revolves around roguelite dungeon crawling, where players build squads of Guardians with different roles like tanks, assassins, warriors, and supports. Each dungeon run consists of enemy waves leading up to a boss fight, requiring strategic positioning—tanks and warriors up front, while damage dealers and supports stay in the back. Combat is mostly automated, with Guardians attacking enemies and building up their ultimate abilities, which players can manually trigger when ready. Ultimates vary by Guardian, dealing damage, healing allies, or applying buffs and debuffs.

Each Guardian has up to four skills, split into passive, auto, and ultimate abilities. Passive skills remain active in combat, auto skills trigger automatically under certain conditions, and ultimates require manual activation at the cost of energy. Beyond leveling up, Guardians can be "enlightened" by consuming duplicates, and at the highest progression stage, they can "ascend" into Radiant versions with better stats, a new upgrade path, and NFT tradeability.

Summoning new Guardians follows a familiar gacha system, similar to Genshin Impact. Players can roll for new Guardians using "Summoning Stones" for standard banners or "Calling Crystals" for limited/exclusive summons, with the latter usually requiring a real-money purchase. As players progress, they’ll earn materials to level up Guardians and craft gear to enhance their stats further.

Pets & Energy Boosters

Pets provide passive bonuses like increased crafting resources, better loot drops, and higher dungeon rewards. Initially available through presales, they will be tradable once the game launches.

Guild of Guardians also uses an energy system that depletes with each dungeon run and refills over time. Unlike traditional mobile games where players buy energy with in-game currency, GOG introduces "Energy Booster" NFTs, which permanently increase energy capacity. Guardians can also get fatigued from excessive dungeon runs, leading to stat penalties or requiring extra energy, but Energy Boosters mitigate this effect, letting players use their favorite Guardians longer without drawbacks.

Endgame Content

For players looking for long-term challenges, Guild of Guardians offers "Endless Dungeon" mode and competitive Arena battles with leaderboard rewards. These modes test players' Guardian lineups and strategies at higher difficulty levels, adding replayability beyond the standard dungeon runs.

Review

Guild of Guardians is a solid contender in the mobile roguelite genre, not just in web3 but in mobile gaming as a whole. Its graphics, sound, and gameplay loop are polished. making it seem like traditional web2 titles. Visually, GoG is well-executed, you can see the small details on each Guardian, and every Guardian has unique ability/ultimate animations that make the player feel immersed in the game. Animations are smooth, from attack projectiles to health bars depleting, making combat feel fluid. The visual clarity when a Guardian’s ultimate is ready is also a nice touch. Teasers and cutscene animations are well done, adding to the game’s overall polish.

Sound design is another strong point. The SFX, VFX, and other audio effects feel polished, making the game sound like a traditional mobile RPG rather than a web3 title. The audio transitions smoothly and fits well with the in-game scenarios.

In terms of gameplay, GoG falls into a niche. The roguelite genre isn’t for everyone, as some players may find the repetitive battles and constant character and equipment progression overwhelming. However, for those who enjoy grind-heavy games, GoG hits the mark. Even as a free-to-play player, you can earn generous rewards just by logging in, consuming your daily energy, and making gradual progress.

The controls are simple and intuitive, especially in battle, though the UI can sometimes feel cluttered with too much information and stats. The core concept isn’t new, as endless character and equipment progression is a staple of the roguelite genre. However, what makes GoG enjoyable is its Genshin Impact-style gacha summoning, pushing players to grind for their ideal 5-star Guardian and build their perfect team.

One of the standout quality-of-life features is the shared level system. If you're in the mid or late game and finally summon a legendary Guardian, you don’t have to start from scratch—they automatically match the level of your existing Guardians. This saves a lot of resources and time, making team-building more flexible and reducing the frustration of grinding a newly acquired character from the ground up.

Overall, Guild of Guardians offers a polished experience with strong visuals, immersive sound, and a rewarding progression system. While its roguelite mechanics may not suit every player, it strikes a good balance between challenge and accessibility, making it enjoyable for both casual and dedicated fans of the genre.
