Overview

Life is Strange: True Colors puts players in the shoes of Alex Chen, a young woman with a power she's spent years trying to suppress: the ability to see, absorb, and manipulate the strong emotions of the people around her. Those emotions appear as colored auras, each one carrying its own texture and weight. When Alex arrives in Haven Springs, Colorado to reunite with her brother Gabe, he dies within days in what the town calls an accident. Alex knows it wasn't.

Developed by Deck Nine and published by Square Enix, True Colors released on September 9, 2021 across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Unlike earlier entries in the series, the game ships as a complete five-chapter experience rather than episodic releases, which changes the pacing considerably. Haven Springs feels lived-in from the first hour, and the mystery builds without artificial cliffhangers between chapters.

How does the empathy mechanic actually work?

The psychic empathy system is the game's defining feature, and it goes well beyond a simple dialogue choice wheel. When Alex senses a strong emotion radiating from someone nearby, she can choose to step closer and absorb it. Each emotion type plays differently:

  • Red auras signal rage, and absorbing them temporarily gives Alex that anger herself
  • Yellow auras carry fear, letting Alex see what someone is afraid of
  • Blue auras hold grief, the most common and most devastating to experience
  • Green auras represent euphoria, rare but memorable when they appear
  • Purple auras signal a deeper, more hidden emotion tied to the game's central mystery

This isn't just flavoring. The auras reveal information you'd otherwise miss, and some of the game's most affecting scenes happen inside the emotional memories Alex accesses when she digs too deep into someone's feelings. The power has a cost, which the writing handles with genuine care.

World and setting: Haven Springs as a character

Haven Springs is a small former mining town nestled in the Colorado Rockies, and Deck Nine put real work into making it feel like a place where people actually live. The record store, the bar, the rooftop garden, the town square where locals gather for a LARP event in one of the game's best chapters. You can explore freely between story beats, picking up conversations, reading community boards, and finding the kind of small details that make the world feel specific rather than generic.

The town also serves the story structurally. Haven Springs is small enough that everyone knows everyone, which means the conspiracy Alex uncovers has real faces attached to it. The people covering up Gabe's death aren't abstract villains. They're neighbors. That tension between community warmth and institutional rot is what gives True Colors its emotional punch.

Visual and audio design

The game's visual presentation is a step up from earlier Life is Strange entries, with facial animation detailed enough to carry the quieter emotional moments without relying on dialogue. The aura effects are clean and readable without being garish, which matters when the empathy system is running constantly.

The soundtrack deserves special mention. Angus and Julia Stone composed the original score, and the licensed track list pulls from Radiohead, Phoebe Bridgers, Gabrielle Aplin, mxmtoon, and Novo Amor, among others. The music choices feel deliberate rather than decorative, matching the emotional register of each scene closely enough that several moments land harder because of what's playing.

Content and replayability

The Deluxe Edition adds Wavelengths, a standalone story following Steph Gingrich through the year before Alex arrives in Haven Springs. Set almost entirely inside Rocky Mountain Record Traders and the KRCT radio station, it's a quieter, more intimate experience that rewards players who want more time with the supporting cast. The Ultimate Edition bundles in Life is Strange Remastered and Life is Strange: Before the Storm Remastered, making it a solid entry point for the series.

The main game offers up to 24 outfits for Alex and relationship paths with both Ryan and Steph, with player choices shaping how those relationships develop. Replaying to explore different emotional decisions and relationship outcomes gives the game meaningful legs beyond a single playthrough, particularly for players who want to see every aura sequence and memory fragment the empathy power can surface.
