3 Steam Ocean Fest Demos Worth Your Time

Steam Ocean Fest runs until May 25th and puts a spotlight on ocean-themed games across every genre. I played through the demos so you do not have to. These three are the ones worth downloading before the fest ends.

Scallywags

The ship was taking on water faster than I could handle. I pulled someone off the cannons to pump it out, which meant less damage dealt, which meant the fight went longer, which meant more water came in. That spiral is Scallywags in one moment.
It is a tactical pirate crew management roguelite from FloWHOA, inspired by FTL and Bomber Crew. You assign a crew of misfits to stations on a talking ship, manage cannons, sails, and repairs simultaneously, and try to survive long enough to challenge nine ace pirates across a node-based map. The ace you are ultimately hunting is called Steven Seagull. I never got close to him in two hours. That is not a criticism. It is the point.

CHOMP CHOMP Carnage

After about three hours I went to the studio's Twitter and asked them how to complete the mine level. Not to give up. Because I was so close and so frustrated I needed to know if I was missing something or just bad at it.

Chomp Chomp Carnage is a fish-eat-fish arcade game from Llamaplay where every creature is crafted from wool. The capsule art alone was enough to download it. It also plays well, which is not always guaranteed. Dash, pull nearby fish in with a magnet mouth, eat smaller things, grow, eat bigger things. Then the challenge levels add mines to dodge, schools to eat in sequence, and a swordfish level that suddenly flips you from apex predator to prey surrounded by things that want to eat you. Three hours in and I had not seen everything the demo had.

The Edge of Water

My first strategy for finding the first objective was to run to the edge of the map, hit the invisible blocker, and handrail all the way around the outside until I found it. No map. No direction beyond the objective text. My second run took twelve minutes.

The Edge of Water is an ocean adventure game from BigMood AB where you surf across water following a great fish migration, herd sea creatures, and solve light environmental puzzles. The aesthetic is lovely throughout. When the mechanics clicked there was real satisfaction in them. The hook for swinging over obstacles was fun enough to keep using past when I needed to. The problem is the first run does not give you enough information to find that satisfaction quickly. Clearer signposting would make this a Play. For now it is a Maybe, and still worth an hour of your time before the fest ends.
