One million units. For a niche Japanese action-adventure series built around stripping vampires in a hyper-accurate recreation of Akihabara, that number means something.
Developer Acquire announced today that the AKIBA'S TRIP series has surpassed one million units in combined physical shipments and digital sales worldwide. The announcement lands on May 19, exactly 15 years after the original AKIBA'S TRIP launched on PSP in Japan.
From a PSP exclusive to a global cult series
The series started small. The first AKIBA'S TRIP released on PSP in May 2011 as a very Japanese, very specific kind of game: an action-RPG set in the real streets of Akihabara, Tokyo's famous electronics and otaku district, where players battle shadowy vampiric beings called Shadowsouls (Kageyashi) by tearing off their clothing to expose them to sunlight. That premise sounds absurd, and it is, but the execution turned it into something genuinely memorable.
The sequel, AKIBA'S TRIP: Undead & Undressed, expanded the formula considerably when it arrived on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in late 2013, then reached PS4 and PC via Steam by 2015. That multi-platform push is what gave the series its international footprint.
A remaster of the original, AKIBA'S TRIP: Hellbound & Debriefed, arrived in May 2021 for Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC, bringing a new generation of players back to where it all began.
What the milestone actually represents
Here's the thing: one million units across a 15-year window is not a blockbuster number by any measure. But for a series this specific, this uncompromising in its niche appeal, it represents something more interesting than raw volume.
Acquire's announcement frames the series as having "archival value" alongside its entertainment purpose. The games documented Akihabara's streets with enough detail that they now serve as a time capsule of the district across different eras. The storefronts, the layout, the atmosphere of the area as it existed in 2011 and 2013 are preserved in playable form. That framing is unusual for a sales announcement, and it gives the milestone a different kind of weight.

2021 remaster on Switch and PC
The key here is that the one million figure combines physical shipments with digital sales across every platform and every entry in the series. Acquire has not broken down individual title performance, so the split between the original, Undead & Undressed, and Hellbound & Debriefed remains unclear.

Where the series stands heading into year 16
Acquire has not announced a new mainline entry alongside this milestone. The announcement reads more as a celebration than a setup for a sequel reveal, though the 15th anniversary framing suggests the developer is at least thinking about the series' future.
For players who have never tried it, the most accessible entry point right now is AKIBA'S TRIP: Undead & Undressed, which remains available on Steam and PS4. Hellbound & Debriefed on Switch is the better choice if you want to start from the beginning.
