Sky Mavis has rolled out a major update for Axie Infinity, introducing a "Stage 2" evolution system that transforms over 250 unique Axie parts. Players can now upgrade their NFTs to boost combat performance and unlock new visual designs. Sky Mavis co-founder Jeff 'Jihoz' Zirlin framed the feature as the realization of a long-held goal: "We're turning Axies into digital collectibles that evolve as you play with them. This has been something that's been at the core of our vision for over five years now."
Launched in 2018, Axie Infinity has attracted millions of players who battle using NFT creatures. The game survived a $622 million exploit and has continued to grow within the Ronin blockchain ecosystem. Zirlin compared Axies to CryptoKitties, calling them animated characters with individual traits rather than static images.

Alongside the evolution mechanic, Sky Mavis is releasing a 20-page comic and an animated short that explore the backstory behind these upgrades. The story follows Ema and Bing as they search for "spirit shells" in Lunacia, eventually uncovering the Atia Temple, where Axies undergo their transformations. Evolving an Axie isn't free. Players need crafting materials or must sacrifice other Axies by burning them, permanently removing those NFTs from circulation. Evolution unlocks at level 10 and requires ascended status. Each part takes 36 hours to complete, though players can skip the wait by paying 200% extra in materials.

Zirlin argued that evolving NFTs solve a problem that has plagued other projects: how to add content without flooding the market. With 11.9 million Axie NFTs spread across 1.9 million wallets, creating new collections risks crashing existing values. Evolution lets Sky Mavis expand the game without minting more supply. The system also ties together all Axie titles through shared experience points, crafting materials, and progression. "We've seen some, let's say, disasters over the last year where NFT projects would need funding, or their communities wanted new content, so they would mint an entirely new collection. And that would basically crash the market for their NFTs. Dynamic NFTs and evolving NFTs allow developers to introduce new content without expanding the supply of their initial collections."

Sky Mavis continues pushing to expand the Axie brand and draw more developers to Ronin. The migration of browser game Pixels to Ronin generated significant momentum. In November 2023, Ronin recorded over 150,000 Unique Active Wallets, with on-chain transactions exceeding 500,000. The native RON token climbed 13% to roughly $0.68, adding to a 37% gain over the prior week and a 59% increase across 30 days. Sky Mavis has also relaxed commercial use restrictions on certain rare Axies, letting owners build projects around their NFT intellectual property.

Sky Mavis launched its first official merch store, headlined by the limited >Code: Axie_ Collection. The line honors the game's 2018 debut, when the first Axies were displayed as raw code. The collection includes a hoodie, t-shirt, and cap, alongside figurines, plushies, and other apparel. Mystic Axie NFT holders get exclusive access to token-gated figurines in both physical and digital formats, plus updated licensing terms. The evolution update marks a shift in how play-to-earn games handle progression, connecting Axie Infinity's origins to a more dynamic, interconnected future.
