Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls - TFG Preview / Art Gallery

The Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls open beta has wrapped up, and the pick rate numbers from high-tier Vibranium-rank matches are in. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls players gravitated hard toward two characters above everyone else: Blade and Magik, who tied for the top spot in overall usage across the beta period.

The numbers behind the beta roster

Data gathered from Vibranium-rank matches during the first 24 hours of the open beta paints a clear picture of where skilled players put their trust. Blade and Magik tied at the top of overall character usage, with Iron Man, Magneto, and Black Panther rounding out the top five. At the other end of the chart, Danger sat firmly at the bottom, barely registering across the sample.

The key here is that the data splits out by role. In the Leader slot (the character in your top starting position), Magik edges ahead, followed by Black Panther, Blade, Doctor Doom, and Spider-Man. Flip to Assist slots and the order shifts: Iron Man leads there, with Magneto, Blade, and Magik following. Blade is the only character who cracks the top four in both categories, which explains why calls to nerf him started surfacing almost immediately after the beta opened.

tip
This data comes from Vibranium rank and above only, covering the first 24 hours of the open beta. It reflects high-level play patterns, not the full player base.

Why Blade and Magik pulled ahead

Blade's appeal at high ranks is pretty straightforward once you've seen him in action. His pressure tools are relentless, his damage output is high, and he rewards players who already have fighting game fundamentals. Magik, on the other hand, brings a different kind of strength: her teleport-based mix-ups and zoning flexibility make her genuinely difficult to read, which is exactly what Vibranium-rank players want in a Leader.

What most players miss looking at these numbers is how well they reflect the beta roster's actual design. The beta featured 16 of the 20 characters available in the full build, and two of the most stylistically distinct picks rose straight to the top. That's not a coincidence.

Green Goblin is the interesting outlier here. He barely shows up in the Vibranium data, yet combo content around him flooded social media throughout the beta. His ceiling looks high, but the execution barrier is keeping him out of ranked lobbies for now. Captain America is another curious case: he's literally the game's starting character, but ranked players weren't prioritizing him. Lower-rank usage data would tell a different story.

What this means heading into launch

Beta meta snapshots are always a moving target, and the development team at Arc System Works will have seen the same Blade nerf discussions the rest of the community has. Whether those concerns translate into adjustments before launch remains to be seen, but the usage data gives the team a clear starting point.

Producer Takeshi Yamanaka confirmed last week that Phoenix Cyclops will be the first of four DLC characters coming in Year 1, so the roster conversation is far from over. Four more fighters entering the mix will shift team compositions and potentially knock Blade and Magik off their perches, depending on how well the new additions are tuned.

For players who want to get ahead of the launch meta, the full Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls roster guide breaks down every confirmed character and what the Year 1 DLC pass adds. If you missed the beta entirely, the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls open beta guide covers everything that was playable, from the confirmed content to the full roster breakdown, so you know exactly what to expect at launch.
