Chris Hansen Gets Banned from Roblox Live on Stage at CrimeCon

Imagine setting up a live child safety demonstration in front of a true crime conference audience, only to have the platform ban your account mid-demo. That's exactly what happened to Chris Hansen at CrimeCon, and the clip has been spreading fast.

What went down on stage at CrimeCon

Chris Hansen, the television personality best known for hosting To Catch a Predator, has spent the past year working alongside YouTuber Schlep to investigate how strangers can approach and contact users through Roblox. Schlep has built a following around sting-style content targeting alleged predators who use the game to reach minors, and the two brought that work directly to CrimeCon for a live demonstration.

The point of the demo was straightforward: show a live audience exactly how easy it is for an adult to initiate contact with a child through Roblox's social systems. Hansen's account was active on stage, the demo was running, and then Roblox's moderation systems flagged and banned the account in real time.

The ban happened while the audience was watching.

The irony the audience witnessed

Here's the thing: the ban didn't undercut the message Hansen and Schlep were trying to make. If anything, it made it louder. The account wasn't doing anything a predator would do. It was being used as part of a child safety presentation at a true crime event, and Roblox's automated moderation pulled it anyway.

What most players and parents miss is that Roblox's moderation operates at scale across a platform with hundreds of millions of registered accounts. Automated systems flag behavior patterns rather than context, which means a demonstration account behaving unusually can trigger the same response as a genuine bad actor. The live ban became the most memorable moment of the presentation precisely because it was unscripted.

important
Roblox's automated moderation cannot distinguish intent, only behavior patterns. Accounts flagged during sting-style investigations may be banned regardless of the purpose behind the activity.

Hansen and Schlep's ongoing investigation

Schlep has been producing content around Roblox child safety for well over a year, with videos documenting how alleged predators use the platform's chat and social features to make contact with younger users. The collaboration with Hansen brought a more traditional investigative journalism angle to what had largely been a YouTube-native story.

The CrimeCon appearance signals that this conversation is moving beyond gaming communities and into broader public and criminal justice spaces. CrimeCon draws an audience of true crime enthusiasts, law enforcement professionals, and advocates, so the platform choice was deliberate. Roblox's child safety record has faced scrutiny before, and a live ban during a safety demo at a conference like this adds another data point to that ongoing conversation.

What this means for Roblox's moderation conversation

Roblox has made public commitments to improving safety features, including parental controls, chat restrictions, and account verification tools. The key here is that automated moderation, while necessary at Roblox's scale, creates situations exactly like the one at CrimeCon: a legitimate safety researcher gets banned while the actual problem the demo was illustrating continues to exist on the platform.

The clip circulating from CrimeCon puts pressure back on Roblox to address not just individual bad actors, but the systemic ease of contact between strangers and minors that Hansen and Schlep have been documenting. Parents who play Roblox alongside their kids or who want to understand the platform's risks would do well to check out the broader Roblox guides collection covering everything from gameplay mechanics to account features.

The conversation around Roblox and child safety isn't going away, and a live ban on a conference stage just made it harder to ignore.
