Civitas Migrates to Immutable zkEVM

Directive Games has announced that its 4X strategy MMO, Civitas, has officially migrated to Immutable zkEVM. This move marks a significant step in the game's ongoing development, aiming to enhance scalability and provide players with a more accessible and cost-effective experience in the web3 gaming space. By transitioning to this Layer 2 solution, Civitas is positioned to benefit from improved performance, reduced transaction costs, and native integration with Immutable’s gaming infrastructure.

The migration from Ethereum to Immutable zkEVM is motivated by the need for a more efficient and game-friendly environment. Immutable zkEVM is a zero-knowledge rollup that is fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, offering improved transaction throughput and significantly lower gas fees. For Directive Games, this means fewer backend challenges and a more streamlined development process, allowing the team to allocate more resources toward game features and content updates.

For players, the move provides immediate improvements in user experience. The integration of Immutable Passport allows for gas-free gameplay and trading, making it easier for both experienced and new users to participate in the game without needing to manage blockchain transaction costs. This approach aligns with the studio’s goal of making web3 games more accessible and reducing entry barriers for a broader audience.

Directive Games stated that their objective has always been to create a community-driven, player-owned virtual world. They view the migration to Immutable zkEVM as a way to build that world more securely, efficiently, and at greater scale.

Avatars and Chosen of Civitas NFT Collection

Holders of the Chosen of Civitas NFT collection will not be required to bridge their assets to the new network. The original collection will remain on Ethereum Layer 1 but will benefit from full interoperability with assets on Immutable zkEVM. This setup ensures continuity for current players while extending the utility of their existing NFTs within the new infrastructure.

The collection includes in-game avatars with distinct traits and capabilities. Each NFT also generates an Ever Fragment on a monthly basis, which can then be used to create Ever Crystals. These crystals play a functional role in gameplay by enabling land productivity in the MMO’s city-building mechanics. At the time of writing, the collection is available on OpenSea with a floor price of 0.1094 ETH.

Broader Context and Studio Activity

Directive Games has indicated that additional details regarding the migration will be released in the coming weeks. These updates are expected to include technical information about Immutable Passport and smart contract integrations, as well as content drops related to the game’s next phase. Players interested in learning more about the migration and upcoming features are encouraged to follow the game’s social media accounts and Discord community.

To provide further clarity, the team will host an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on June 26 at 10:30 AM UTC. During this session, the developers will answer questions and share more about how the move to Immutable zkEVM will influence gameplay and ongoing development efforts.

Final Thoughts

The migration of Civitas comes shortly after Directive Games shared new developments for its other title, The Machines Arena, which runs on the Ronin blockchain. That game, a top-down hero shooter, recently entered Open Beta Season 3 and is available for play on both Android and PC. This shows Directive Games’ continued commitment to exploring multiple blockchain ecosystems while focusing on building games that leverage the benefits of web3 technologies.
