Dispatch Smashes Sales Expectations

AdHoc Studio's Dispatch hit a sales milestone in three months that the team originally projected would take three years. The superhero workplace comedy adventure has moved over one million copies, with player counts climbing steadily as each weekly episode drops. The game's final two episodes launched today, pulling in players who'd been holding out to binge the complete story.

AdHoc Studio's founders see this performance as proof that narrative-driven adventure games—the kind Telltale used to make—still have a real audience, even if investors remain skeptical. Creative director Nick Herman believes the game's commercial success could shift how the industry thinks about story-focused projects and their viability in the current market.

Episodic releases drove steady player growth

Most Steam launches spike hard at release and drop off fast. Dispatch did the opposite. Launch day saw roughly 12,000 concurrent players. After episodes three and four went live, that number jumped to 65,000. The following week it doubled again to 131,000.

That growth pattern reflects the game's episodic structure, which functions like a network TV show. Players come back each week for new content, while others wait for the full season to drop before buying in. Word of mouth, streamer coverage, and delayed press attention all fed into the momentum as the weeks rolled on, keeping player engagement climbing instead of falling off.

Funding story-driven games remains difficult

AdHoc Studio struggled to secure funding for Dispatch because investors don't know how to evaluate story-focused games. Traditional metrics—player retention curves, monetization funnels—don't apply when success depends on script quality, animation timing, directorial choices, and voice performances. Herman compared it to judging a Formula One team solely by the cars while ignoring the drivers. Both the creative and technical sides matter equally for this kind of game.

Several AdHoc founders worked at Telltale before the studio collapsed in 2018, and they carried those lessons forward. Early investor pitches went nowhere. Eventually the studio partnered with Critical Role, the tabletop RPG media company, which provided funding and access to voice acting talent.

Professional voice acting stays non-negotiable

Dispatch features Aaron Paul and Jeffrey Wright, among other high-profile voice actors. The studio deliberately avoided AI-generated voices. Herman argues that AI can't replicate the unexpected emotional depth and nuance professional actors bring to a performance. Co-founder Choung emphasized that the studio prioritizes creative integrity over cost-cutting shortcuts. Human performances are what make the storytelling work, and that's not something AI can fake convincingly yet.

Narrative games prove they can still sell

Dispatch's commercial performance demonstrates that narrative-driven adventure games can still find a large audience and sustain engagement over time. The combination of episodic storytelling, strong voice work, and a release strategy borrowed from television proved effective. AdHoc Studio showed that games built around narrative and performance can compete commercially if executed well.
