We forced NVIDIA neural rendering onto a 1992 raycaster. The full DOSBox and dgVoodoo2 chain, settings, footage, and the 10 fps it costs you.
DLSS 5 Wolfenstein 3D works, and it works through a chain only a masochist would build. DOSBox runs the game, dgVoodoo2 lifts the emulator window to DirectX 11, a feeder fakes motion vectors, RenoDX hosts the add-on, and the official NVIDIA library repaints every frame. On an RTX 5090 Mobile with a Core Ultra 9 275HX, the prize is about 10 fps in a game that once ran on a 286.
Understand one thing before you start. The game never touches your GPU , DOSBox does , so every step below targets the emulator and not BJ Blazkowicz. That is the entire secret of how to run DLSS 5 on old games: lift the API, fake the data, accept the suffering.
What You Need
| Component | Its job in the chain |
|---|---|
| DOSBox 0.74-3 or DOSBox-X | Runs the DOS executable and draws the window you will actually repaint. |
| dgVoodoo2 | Wraps DirectDraw or Direct3D 9 output into DirectX 11. |
| ReShade with add-on support | Loads everything else into the process. |
| DLSS5-Feeder with motion vector shaders | Invents the motion and depth data a 1992 game never produced. |
| RenoDX DLSS 5 add-on | Puts the neural rendering controls into the ReShade overlay. |
| NVIDIA neural rendering library | The official model, shipped with DLSS 5 since September 3, 2026. |
| RTX 50 series GPU | Mandatory, because NVIDIA locked DLSS 5 to Blackwell. |
Step 1. Drag the Game to DirectX 11
Wolfenstein 3D is a DOS raycaster with no DirectX to hook, so DOSBox becomes the patient. The Steam and GOG releases already ship with DOSBox, which saves you one download and none of the pain.
- Open dosbox.conf and set output to ddraw in classic DOSBox or to direct3d in DOSBox-X.
- Download dgVoodoo2 from its official page and open the MS folder inside the archive.
- Take DDraw.dll or D3D9.dll from the x86 subfolder, because DOSBox 0.74-3 is a 32-bit program.
- Drop that file with dgVoodooCpl.exe and dgVoodoo.conf next to dosbox.exe.
- Run dgVoodooCpl.exe and set the output API to Direct3D 11 with feature level 11.0.
- Launch the game and look for the dgVoodoo watermark , your only proof the wrapper is alive.
Step 2. Feed It Fake Motion Vectors
DLSS 5 eats color plus motion data. Wolfenstein 3D offers color and a floor that does not exist. Install ReShade on dosbox.exe with add-on support, pick DirectX 11 in the wizard, then add DLSS5-Feeder and its motion vector shader pack. The 32-bit feeder talks to a 64-bit host bridge by itself.
Step 3. Install RenoDX
Copy the add-on next to dosbox.exe, launch, press Home, and open the Add-ons tab. A correct RenoDX DLSS 5 addon install shows a Neural Rendering panel with intensity, presets, injection point, and pass count. No panel means wrong folder depth , move the files one level and try again.
Step 4. Add the DLSS 5 Library
The neural rendering library is official and ships with DLSS 5 titles since launch. The answer to where to get nvngx_dlssnr.dll is any game that already supports DLSS 5. Place it next to the add-on together with a regular DLSS upscaler file for the DLAA pass, launch, and press F6 to toggle the effect.
| Setting | Starting value | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Injection point | Output | The safest stage for a game with no real geometry. |
| Intensity | Medium | Full strength turns the palette into a preset. |
| Preset | Natural | Default goes green and Cinematic goes purple at high strength. |
| Passes | x1 | Extra passes darken the frame and multiply hallucinations. |
| Enable Upscaling | Off | Unfinished, and it flickers. |
Wolfenstein 3D Nuances
Walls are flat textures and enemies are sprites, so the model has almost no geometry to respect. It compensates with confidence. Guards can grow faces they never had, and corridors change mood with every preset. If the panel stays empty or the watermark never shows, the full instructions cover every DirectX branch, folder depth, and hotkey.
DLSS 5 multipass at x2 and above samples a single frame and ignores history, so every frame becomes a new opinion. The dgVoodoo watermark is a useful reference here, because it gets darker with each pass.
- Spamming F6 leaks VRAM, so compare looks with the intensity slider instead.
- The same chain works on the shareware episode, which is a cheap way to test before touching your paid copy.
- Fullscreen DOSBox sometimes hides the overlay, so debug in a window.
Performance
The neural pass costs the same whether it repaints Cyberpunk or a 320x200 blue corridor. Our DLSS 5 RTX 5090 laptop run sat around 10 fps, which is still faster than anyone actually aims in this game. Treat it as the most expensive Wolfenstein 3D graphics mod ever made, not as a way to play.
Verdict
It runs. It is useless. It is also the purest test of what DLSS 5 draws when the game gives it nothing , which is why you should try it once and never again.
