Two free games. One goes full 90s supernatural nostalgia, the other is a psychological horror experience that takes place entirely inside a house you cannot leave. The Epic Games Store is handing out some genuinely interesting picks this week, running July 16 through July 23.

The nostalgia pick: Echo Generation Midnight Edition
Echo Generation: Midnight Edition is the kind of game that hits a very specific sweet spot. Set in the 1990s, it drops you into a small town with a group of kids who stumble onto something supernatural. Turn-based combat, pets in your party, and more than 30 collectible comic books that each unlock mini-games tied to skills and stat boosts. The vibe is unmistakably Stranger Things-adjacent, but the game has its own identity built around exploration, NPC conversations, and uncovering what is actually going on with the town.
Here's the thing: free turn-based RPGs with this much charm do not come around often. The Midnight Edition is the complete package, and it is rated Everyone 10+, so the horror here is the fun kind.
- Genre: Adventure, RPG, Turn-Based
- Mode: Single Player
- Platform: PC
The one that will actually unsettle you: Luto
Luto is a different beast entirely. Developed by Broken Bird Games, this is a first-person psychological horror game where you play as someone who cannot leave their house. The game moves between reality and something far less stable as you piece together a story involving hope, loss, regret, ghosts, and death. That is the actual description, and it earns every word.
This is not a jump-scare game. Luto is the kind of horror that lingers because it is rooted in real emotional weight. If you have played walking horror experiences and found them too shallow, Luto has a reputation for going somewhere darker and more personal. Rated Mature 17+, and that rating is there for a reason.
- Genre: Adventure, Horror
- Mode: Single Player
- Platform: PC
The mobile bonus: The Ouroboros King
The Ouroboros King is the third freebie this week, available on mobile. It is a chess-based roguelike strategy game from Oriol Cosp Games that blends traditional chess movement with turn-based tactical decisions and a roguelite retry system. The game was previously free on PC and Mac back in June, and now mobile players can claim it at no cost. The PC and Mac version normally runs $9.99.
The mobile version requires the Epic Games Store mobile app, accessible via QR code from the Epic website. It is not available through the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store outside the EU.
What this means for horror fans right now
Two free horror-adjacent games in the same week is not something the Epic Games Store does constantly. Echo Generation is the accessible entry point, and Luto is for players who want something that actually challenges them emotionally. Both are worth claiming even if you do not plan to play immediately, since they stay in your library once added.
If Luto gets you in the mood for more ghost-hunting and atmospheric dread, the Phasmophobia community has been deep in content lately. Check out the Phasmophobia Tanglewood rework breakdown to see how Kinetic Games overhauled one of the game's most-played maps, and the Phasmophobia player character update guide covers the full ghost hunter customization overhaul that dropped earlier this year.
All three games are claimable now through July 23. Head to the Epic Games Store to add them to your library before the window closes, and keep an eye on our gaming guides for coverage of what drops next week.
