Playground Games had a clear message for Xbox players at Gamescom 2026: Fable will not be a locked 30 FPS experience on console. The studio confirmed during this week's extended gameplay presentation that a dedicated 60 FPS performance mode is coming to Xbox Series X|S at launch.
What the Xbox Store page actually reveals
The confirmation didn't just come from stage presentation. The Fable Xbox Store listing quietly spelled it out: "Fable is optimized for Xbox Series X|S consoles supporting 4K Ultra HD, HDR, and 60 FPS." That single line tells you everything about how the graphics modes are structured.
Based on that listing, Fable will ship with three distinct graphics options on Xbox consoles. A 4K UHD mode targeting 30 FPS for players who want the sharpest image possible. An HDR mode sitting at 40 FPS, which is the sweet spot for anyone with a 120Hz display running VRR. Then the performance mode, which trades some visual fidelity to hit a full 60 FPS.
The Gamescom demo and what it showed running at 60 FPS
The playable demo at Gamescom ran on PC hardware at Ultra settings. Playground Games used that build to demonstrate the game's combat, build variety, and the power of the ForzaTech engine underneath it all. The footage circulating from the event shows the game moving fluidly through Albion's environments, which should ease some of the concern that had been building around console performance.
Here's the thing: the demo technically ran at 30 FPS on Ultra PC settings, but players and insiders noted it was being played at 60 FPS during the live session. That distinction matters because it shows the studio is actively targeting the higher frame rate as a real, playable experience rather than a marketing bullet point.

Launch window and platform availability
Fable is scheduled to release on February 23, 2027. The game comes to Xbox Series X|S, PC via both the Microsoft Store and Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Game Pass subscribers get it on day one, which given the Game Pass catalog, is exactly what most Xbox players will be banking on.
The Gamescom demo also gave a deeper look at the game's combat and build system, which turned out to be more layered than many expected. Playground Games also pushed a notable facial redesign for the female protagonist ahead of the event, a change that generated significant discussion in the weeks leading up to Gamescom.
With a confirmed launch date and now concrete performance specs on console, Fable is starting to feel like a real, finished product rather than a perpetual "coming soon."
