Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3's Airship

Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, has shared new information about the third and final installment, confirming key locations, expanded gameplay mechanics, and a development team that has remained almost entirely intact from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

What Hamaguchi Confirmed

In a recent interview with Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, Hamaguchi outlined several details that fans of the original Final Fantasy 7 will recognize immediately. Wutai and Rocket Town will both appear in Remake Part 3, with Wutai positioned as "one of the main locations" given Yuffie's significant role throughout the trilogy.

"Yuffie's made a very prominent appearance, stating her case about her homeland. So if Wutai's not featured, I think the fans are going to yell at me," Hamaguchi said.

The director also highlighted the Highwind airship as a central gameplay element. "Flying the Highwind is a very large part of the third installment," he said, without offering additional specifics. That single statement suggests a notable shift in how players will move through the world compared to Rebirth's ground-based exploration.

Chocobo mechanics will also evolve, though Hamaguchi didn't confirm whether the fan-favorite Chocobo breeding system will return. What he did say is that the birds will work differently than they did in Rebirth.

Expanding on Rebirth's Foundation

Hamaguchi made his design philosophy clear. "We didn't want the three installments to be a reskinning of the same game over and over again," he explained. "We want to make sure we're expanding with every installment in terms of scale, as well as retaining that freshness as you go into each installment."

The card gameQueen's Blood, one of Rebirth's standout minigames, will return in an enhanced form. Hamaguchi had previously mentioned this in January, describing it as a "powered-up version" of what players experienced before.

"Queen's Blood is a very popular and beloved minigame, and I believe a lot of people are still wanting something like that," he said. "I want to expand on Queen's Blood so that we are enhancing it, and giving you a more powered-up version of it when you see that third instalment."

info
Rebirth ends with players in the Forgotten City. If Remake Part 3 follows the structure of the original Final Fantasy 7, locations like the Great Glacier and Icicle Inn could appear early in the game's progression.

A Near-Identical Team Behind the Scenes

One of the more revealing details Hamaguchi shared is the level of continuity on the development side. Roughly 95 percent of the team that built Rebirth has stayed on for Part 3. That kind of staff retention is rare for a project this large and points to a production that has kept its momentum without the disruption of rebuilding from scratch.

Hamaguchi said a formal reveal is planned for sometime this year. "I'm hoping it's not going to be too far in the future," he added.

Watch for any Square Enix showcase announcements in the months ahead. With 95 percent of Rebirth's team still in place and key details already emerging, the official reveal could happen sooner than expected.

In related news, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, targeting 30 FPS, with a release date set for June 3rd.
