Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, has pulled back the curtain on what players can expect from the third and final installment, confirming key locations, expanded gameplay mechanics, and a development team that is nearly identical to the one behind Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
What Hamaguchi Confirmed
In an interview with Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, Hamaguchi laid out several details that fans of the original Final Fantasy 7 will immediately recognize. Wutai and Rocket Town are both confirmed as locations in Remake Part 3, with Wutai described as "one of the main locations" given Yuffie's prominent role throughout the trilogy.
"Yuffie's made a very prominent appearance, stating her case about her homeland. So if Wutai's not featured, I think the fans are going to yell at me," Hamaguchi said.
Beyond confirmed locations, the director pointed to the Highwind airship as a major gameplay pillar. "Flying the Highwind is a very large part of the third installment," he said, stopping short of elaborating further. Here's the thing: that single line signals a meaningful shift in how players will traverse the world compared to Rebirth's ground-focused exploration.
Chocobo mechanics will also change, though Hamaguchi stopped short of confirming or denying the return of the fan-favorite Chocobo breeding system. What he did confirm is that the birds will function differently than they did in Rebirth.

Hamaguchi was direct about the design philosophy driving Remake Part 3. "We didn't want the three installments to be a reskinning of the same game over and over again," he explained. "We want to make sure we're expanding with every installment in terms of scale, as well as retaining that freshness as you go into each installment."
The card gameQueen's Blood, one of Rebirth's most celebrated minigames, is also returning. Hamaguchi had previously confirmed this in January, calling it a "powered-up version" of what players experienced before.
"Queen's Blood is a very popular and beloved minigame, and I believe a lot of people are still wanting something like that," he said. "I want to expand on Queen's Blood so that we are enhancing it, and giving you a more powered-up version of it when you see that third instalment."

One of the more telling details Hamaguchi shared is just how much continuity exists behind the camera. Approximately 95 percent of the development team that worked on Rebirth has carried over to Part 3. That level of staff retention is unusual for a project of this scale and suggests the production has maintained strong momentum without the friction of rebuilding a new team.
As for when fans will get their first official look, Hamaguchi said a reveal is planned for sometime this year. "I'm hoping it's not going to be too far in the future," he added.
