A Soccer Game That’s Anything But Traditional

Originally released in 2005, Super Mario Strikers isn't your typical sports sim. Instead of focusing on realism, the game amps things up with aggressive tackles, power-ups, and over-the-top special moves. Mario, Luigi, Peach, and other iconic characters hit the pitch with one goal in mind: total domination.

Matches are fast, aggressive, and unpredictable. Familiar items like mushrooms and shells can turn the tide in seconds, but the biggest game-changer is the Super Strike. Nail it, and you’ll put two points on the board with a single shot. The mechanics are easy to pick up, making it accessible for newcomers, but there’s still enough room for strategy and skill for longtime players to flex.

On Nintendo Switch 2, the game holds up surprisingly well. The core gameplay remains untouched, preserving that original GameCube feel, but it’s now available to a wider audience as part of Nintendo’s expanding classics library.

What You Need to Play

To jump in, you’ll need a Nintendo Switch 2 and an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. This version of Super Mario Strikers is only available through the GameCube Classics collection, which is exclusive to this top-tier subscription on Nintendo’s latest hardware.

Not sure what’s in each plan? The base Nintendo Switch Online membership gets you access to NES, Super NES, and Game Boy titles, along with online multiplayer for supported games, cloud saves, and mobile app features like voice chat and music streaming. Nintendo Switch 2 owners also get access to GameChat in compatible titles.

The Expansion Pack tier adds even more to the mix, unlocking games from the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, and SEGA Genesis libraries. It also includes DLC for titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Most importantly for retro fans, it’s the only way to play GameCube titles like Super Mario Strikers on the Switch 2. The plan also includes exclusive upgrade packs for games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

GameCube Love on Switch 2

The return of Super Mario Strikers is another sign that Nintendo is doubling down on bringing back its older titles in a meaningful way. GameCube support was one of the most requested features for years, and now that it’s here, players finally get to revisit or discover some of the most unique games in Nintendo’s back catalog.

Whether you played it back in 2005 or you’re checking it out for the first time, Super Mario Strikers is worth your time. It’s fast, chaotic, and full of Nintendo charm - and now it’s just a few clicks away on Switch 2.
