Sucker Punch dropped a proper surprise at today's PlayStation State of Play: Jin Sakai, the protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima, is returning as a playable character in Ghost of Yotei's new roguelike mode, Most Wanted. The mode launches October 1 as part of the Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition and the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion.
Jin Sakai crashes the party
When Sucker Punch first announced Most Wanted back in August alongside the Complete Edition, they mentioned three playable characters: Atsu, Oyuki, and Nagato. Today's trailer added a fourth. Jin Sakai arrives with all four of his combat stances from Ghost of Tsushima, and the trailer showed several of them in action.
Here's the thing: none of this is canon. The presence of story bosses outside the main narrative already signaled that, and Jin's appearance confirms it outright. That's actually freeing. Sucker Punch can play with the character without worrying about lore consequences, and players get to see how Jin's stance-based combat translates into a completely different game's systems.
All four characters start with a katana, but each has their own distinct weapon as their primary tool. Atsu fights with dual katanas, Oyuki uses a kusarigama, and Nagato wields a yari. Jin's unique weapon loadout wasn't fully detailed in the trailer, but his four stances should give him the most varied combat options of the group. Atsu is the only character available from the start. The other three, Jin included, need to be unlocked through play.
How Most Wanted actually works
Most Wanted is a single-player survival mode built around self-contained runs. You accept a bounty to hunt down one of the Yotei Six, then fight through escalating waves of enemies on your way to the boss. Die, and the run ends. Simple structure, but the systems layered on top are where it gets interesting.
After clearing each wave, you pick from a set of perks to build out your run. Sucker Punch confirmed some specific examples: one perk sets your blades on fire when your HP drops below a certain threshold, another summons wolves to attack enemies after landing enough consecutive hits. Characters also have Ultimate abilities and Kill-Streak bonuses, which push the mode toward a more arcade-feeling rhythm than the main game.
Between runs, you spend Mon (a currency earned during bounties) on permanent upgrades. These include new techniques, charms, and weapon upgrades that carry forward into future runs. Bounties can be replayed at higher difficulty tiers for better rewards, with the final and hardest bounty targeting the game's main villain, Lord Saito.
Sucker Punch described the design intent clearly on the PlayStation Blog: “We want playing through runs to take the familiar weapons and systems you're used to and turn them into a fresh experience that lets you experiment with characters and builds to find the loadout that works best for you.”
PlayStation's roguelike DLC habit
Most Wanted fits a pattern that's been developing across PlayStation's first-party lineup. The Last of Us Part II got No Return. God of War: Ragnarok got Valhalla. Both were well-received additions that gave players a reason to return to games they'd already finished. Sucker Punch is clearly aware of this, and Most Wanted looks like a deliberate attempt to do the same for Ghost of Yotei.
What sets Most Wanted apart is the cross-game character pull. Bringing Jin Sakai over isn't just fan service, it's a concrete reason for Ghost of Tsushima players who skipped Yotei to reconsider. The $14.99 upgrade path for existing owners makes that calculation pretty easy.
Complete Edition and Echoes of Sekigahara details
Most Wanted is only part of what arrives October 1. The Echoes of Sekigahara expansion adds a full new location, described as an "unseen valley" where a gang of warriors called the Vipers has taken hold. The story splits between Atsu's present-day hunt and flashbacks to her time during the Battle of Sekigahara, filling in a key moment in her backstory before she returned home.
The expansion includes new weapons, armor sets, dyes, and enemies. A free update dropping alongside the Complete Edition will also add a Beauty of Yotei mode and expanded accessibility options.
Pricing breaks down like this:
Notably, Legends, Ghost of Yotei's co-op multiplayer mode, doesn't appear to be getting new content with this update. If you want a refresher on how that mode works before October, the Ghost of Yotei Legends guide covers everything you need to know about accessing it.
Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition launches on PS5 on October 1. If you're planning to jump in fresh or want to optimize before Most Wanted drops, the Ghost of Yotei strategy guides collection has you covered on settings, combat, and everything in between.
