Sony is running two shows back to back this week
Sony is airing not one but two presentations this week, with the PlayStation State of Play going live on September 3 at 6am PT / 9am ET / 2pm GMT. The moment that main show wraps, State of Play Japan kicks off immediately after. Two shows, one sitting, and the biggest confirmed draw is Final Fantasy 7 Revelation closing out the first broadcast.
For fans who picked up Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and have been tracking where Square Enix takes the trilogy next, this is the show to watch. Revelation already appeared at Gamescom last week, but that look was brief. The expectation here is something more substantial.
What Sony has confirmed for the main show
Here's the thing: Sony has only officially confirmed one game for the main State of Play, and that's the extended look at Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. That's it. One confirmed title closing the show.
That's actually pretty standard Sony behaviour for these events. The company rarely telegraphs its full lineup ahead of time, which means the rest of the broadcast is genuinely unknown. Games like Rayman Legends Retold, Star Wars Galactic Racer, and Control Resonant are reasonable guesses for the kind of mid-show content that tends to fill these presentations, but nothing beyond Revelation has been locked in publicly.
Past State of Play events this year ran around 40 minutes each, though the February and June shows stretched to roughly an hour. No runtime has been confirmed for the September broadcast, so plan accordingly.
State of Play Japan is the second show worth watching
Immediately following the main presentation, State of Play Japan takes over. Sony describes it as featuring deep dives into upcoming games from studios across Japan and Asia, including new gameplay and announcements.
Last year's equivalent show pulled in appearances from Capcom, Sega, Square Enix, and Bandai Namco, among others. The timing relative to Tokyo Game Show later this month makes this segment particularly interesting. Some publishers may be holding their bigger reveals specifically for this slot rather than the main show.
Where to watch both broadcasts
Both shows stream simultaneously on PlayStation's YouTube and Twitch channels. Pick whichever platform you prefer. The YouTube stream is typically the more stable option for rewatching immediately after broadcast, but both go live at the same time.
What most players miss with these events is that the Japan segment rarely gets the same pre-show coverage as the main State of Play. If you tune out after the Revelation segment, you may miss announcements that end up being some of the more interesting reveals of the whole event.
The FF7 Revelation factor
Revelation is the concluding chapter of Square Enix's FF7 Remake trilogy, following directly on from the events of FF7 Rebirth. The Gamescom showing last week confirmed the full party is back, with Yuffie, Barret, and Tifa all visible in what appeared to be an aerial sequence. An extended look at State of Play could mean a release window announcement, a deeper gameplay segment, or both.
