Polyphony Digital has confirmed Moza Racing as the official peripheral partner of Gran Turismo 7, with the two companies already working on a Gran Turismo-branded steering wheel controller for PS5.

The announcement is a genuine surprise. None of Moza Racing's current hardware lineup is compatible with PS5, which makes this partnership less a celebration of existing support and more a signal of serious intent going forward.

A partnership built on motor technology, not just marketing

Here's the thing: Kazunori Yamauchi did not reach for the standard press release language when explaining why Polyphony chose Moza. The Gran Turismo creator pointed out that he first noticed Moza through their camera stabilisation gimbals, specifically because gimbals and steering wheel controllers share the same underlying technology: precise electric motor control. That is a very specific, very nerdy reason to trust a hardware partner, and it is exactly the kind of reasoning that suggests this collaboration goes deeper than a logo placement.

Yamauchi framed the partnership as a continuation of a journey that started with Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, calling the evolution of consumer-level force feedback steering an ongoing process. The implication is that Moza's motor engineering expertise is what Polyphony wanted access to, not just a name to put on a box.

What the hardware will actually look like

Details on the finished product are still sparse. The announcement confirms a Gran Turismo-branded steering wheel controller is in development, but Moza's own statement makes clear that no officially licensed PlayStation products have shipped yet. Development is ongoing, with the company promising more specifics in the coming months.

Moza Racing sits firmly in the enthusiast tier of sim racing hardware. Their direct-drive wheel bases and load cell pedal sets are built for players who treat sim racing as a serious discipline, and the price points reflect that. Expect this collaboration to produce hardware aimed at the top end of the Gran Turismo player base, not budget-conscious newcomers.

Moza Racing's current product range is not compatible with PS5. Any existing Moza hardware you own will not work with Gran Turismo 7 until officially licensed PS5 products are released.

Gran Turismo World Series and the road ahead

The timing of this announcement is interesting because it also ties into the Gran Turismo World Series, where Moza Racing is now listed as an official partner. The practical question of which hardware competitors will actually use at upcoming World Series events remains unanswered, though both parties have presumably worked through those logistics before going public.

What this does signal is that Polyphony Digital is thinking seriously about the competitive and enthusiast side of Gran Turismo's future. World Series events are the highest-profile expression of the game as a competitive platform, and aligning that with a hardware partner known for precision equipment sends a clear message about the direction the franchise is heading.

The key here is that this partnership is framed as a beginning, not a finished product launch. Moza's statement explicitly describes it as "the beginning of a new chapter" with "more exciting announcements to come." For Gran Turismo players who have been waiting for a serious force feedback wheel option on PS5 beyond the existing first-party and Fanatec-adjacent options, this is the most concrete sign yet that something meaningful is in the pipeline.
