GTA 6’s file size is 210GB on PS5. That’s the download size PlayStation Game Size found in the PlayStation Store’s backend, as Eurogamer reported on 28 October. Massive. That is huge, and I’m going to be buying a PS5 just for this game, so it turns out I need to look into the storage before I buy one.
Key takeaways
- GTA 6 is a 210GB download on PS5, and there’s no confirmed Xbox size yet.
- An 825GB PS5 only has about 667GB you can use, so GTA 6 takes almost a third of it.
- Pre-loading starts on 12 November, a week before GTA 6 comes out on 19 November.
How big is GTA 6 on PS5?
GTA 6 is a 210GB download on PS5. The space it ends up taking on the console once it’s installed may be a bit smaller, but everyone has to download over 200GB to play it. Nobody knows yet whether a day-one patch comes on top of that, or whether it’s already inside the 210GB.
I don’t know what the biggest game on my PC is, but for comparison, my PC only has a 1TB SSD, and 210GB is about a quarter of that. So I can only imagine what a struggle it might be on a PS5. And that’s just the standard game. I assume once there’s more to go with it, you’re going to need even more space.
How much storage does a PS5 actually have?
I couldn’t remember the smallest PS5 storage and assumed it was 500GB. Every PS5 has more than that on the box, but less than the box says once the system takes its share. Here’s roughly what each model leaves you for games:
| PS5 model | Storage on the box | Space you can use |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS5 (2020) | 825GB | About 667GB |
| PS5 Slim, disc or digital (2023) | 1TB | About 848GB |
| PS5 Digital Edition, 2025 revision (Europe) | 825GB | About 667GB |
| PS5 Pro | 2TB | About 1.89TB |
So on the 825GB models, GTA 6 alone eats almost a third of your space, and on the 1TB Slim it’s about a quarter. The PS5 Pro is the only one where you’d barely notice it. If you do run out, every PS5 takes an extra M.2 SSD from 250GB up to 8TB, as long as it’s a PCIe Gen4 NVMe drive with cooling on it, according to PlayStation’s own support page.
How big is GTA 6 on Xbox?
Rockstar and Microsoft haven’t confirmed GTA 6’s size on Xbox Series X|S yet. If it lands anywhere near the PS5’s 210GB, the Series S is the one to worry about. The 512GB Series S only has about 364GB free for games, so GTA 6 would take well over half of it. The Series X has about 802GB to use from its 1TB.
When can you pre-load GTA 6?
You can pre-load GTA 6 from 12 November, and it comes out on 19 November on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. I would 100% pre-load on the 12th. Anything you can pre-load before it’s out, do it, because everyone that doesn’t pre-load is going to be hammering it to get it downloaded on the 19th.
There are even reports that the US economy is going to take a hit from how much time off people are taking for it. Economics professor José García Montalvo of Pompeu Fabra University estimated that about 1.5 million Americans could skip work on launch day, costing around $1 billion in lost productivity, as IBTimes reported. He calls it an academic projection, not an official forecast.
A GameSquare survey of 1,000 US full-time workers who game, run in September, found 46% of them are considering time off for GTA 6 and 16% definitely plan to take it, with two days the median plan. That should give you an indication. Anything you can do before the 19th to make sure you’re playing on the 19th is probably the safe bet.
The same survey found 24% of those gamers might buy memory or console storage to be ready for it. So I’m not the only one who’s going to be looking at storage before launch day.
Am I buying a PS5 for GTA 6?
Yes, I think I’m going to have to buy a PlayStation. Day one on console, not waiting for PC. There’s still no official PC date, and I don’t think I’m going to be able to get away with waiting for it. I went through the GTA 6 pre-order and PS5 prices earlier this month, when I first worked out I’d need a PS5.
I’ll see how easily it fits into my streaming setup for TikTok before I actually go through with it, though, because it is a lot of money just for one game. After Sony’s April price rise, the PS5 Digital Edition is $599.99 in the US and the PS5 Pro is $899.99, before the $79.99 for GTA 6 itself. And going by that storage table, I’ll be looking at how much space comes in the box before I pick one.
You can find more on the game on games.gg’s GTA 6 page.
