Yes. At $9.99, I’d 100% say pick up the Resident Evil 4 remake. It’s 75% off on Steam until 3 November, down from $39.99, as part of Steam Scream Fest, and Steam players rate it Overwhelmingly Positive (Steam). That’s a very good price for it, even if I’m someone who’d rather watch Resident Evil than play it.

Key takeaways

  • The Resident Evil 4 remake is $9.99 on Steam until 3 November, 75% off its usual $39.99.
  • The Gold Edition, with Separate Ways and the Extra DLC Pack, is $14.99, down from $49.99.
  • I’ve loved watching it, but something about Resident Evil’s controls means I can’t get into it as the player.

Is Resident Evil 4 remake worth it at $9.99?

The Resident Evil 4 remake is worth it at $9.99, and for me it’s not close. Steam shows 192,938 reviews for it. 96% of the 73,654 in English are positive, and so are 97% of the 4,630 left in the last 30 days.

The Metacritic score on its Steam page is 91. The discount ends on 3 November, so there’s about a week left to grab it. For $10, it’s definitely worth a pickup.

What do you get in the Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition?

The Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition is $14.99 in the same sale, 70% off its $49.99 price. It adds Separate Ways, a side story where you play as Ada Wong, and the Extra DLC Pack, which has extra outfits plus some weapons and items.

Steam’s page warns that both can also be bought on their own, so check you don’t end up paying for them twice. If you only want the main game, the $9.99 version is the one.

You get The Mercenaries either way. The wave-survival minigame from the original was added to the remake as a free download in April 2023. On the same day, Capcom also added microtransactions that let you pay to upgrade weapons faster (Wikipedia).

Is Resident Evil 4 remake good?

The Resident Evil 4 remake is good. It’s definitely a fun game, and I can see why people like it. Critics loved it too: 98% of 193 critic reviews on OpenCritic recommend it, and it was up for Game of the Year at both The Game Awards and the Golden Joysticks.

People bought it as well. It sold over 10 million copies by April 2025, which made it the fastest-selling Resident Evil game until Resident Evil Requiem passed it this year. By September 2026 it was at 16.8 million, which could make it the best-selling remake ever.

I do think some parts of it might be a bit out of line with how gamers play now. But for the price, it’s definitely worth a pickup.

Why can’t I get into Resident Evil games?

There’s something about Resident Evil games I can’t get into as the player. It’s the control system, and the back and forth, and all of that. I just can’t get into it enough to have fun as the one controlling it.

I’ve watched a lot of it, though. I’ve watched Markiplier, Jacksepticeye and one other finish the latest three, maybe four, Resident Evil games, and I really enjoyed watching them. So it’s appealing. I just can’t play it.

The remake did change how it controls compared to the original. Leon can now move while he shoots and reload on the move, he can parry with his knife, and the knife wears down until the Merchant repairs it. Wikipedia also says Capcom cut back on quick time events.

If the controls are what worries you too, the free Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Demo is still on the Steam page. You can try it before you spend the $10.

How is the remake different from the original Resident Evil 4?

I’ve played the original Resident Evil 4, which came out in January 2005. I think I also picked up the remake, but I didn’t play it too much.

The remake keeps the same setup: Leon Kennedy is sent to rural Spain to rescue Ashley Graham, the US president’s daughter, from a cult. It updates the plot and the visuals, gives Ashley more of a character, adds crafting for ammo and items, and gives the Merchant side quests to do along the way.

Metacritic’s summary is that it “modernizes the graphics, controls, and story while retaining much of what made the original a survival horror classic.” It came out on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on 24 March 2023, on iPhone, iPad and Mac that December, and on Nintendo Switch 2 on 16 October 2026. The $9.99 deal is the Steam version, so it’s PC only.

How many people still play Resident Evil 4 remake?

The Resident Evil 4 remake still has a big crowd on Steam for a game that’s three and a half years old. 9,221 people were playing it when I checked today, according to Steam. SteamCharts puts the last 30 days at an average of 9,881 players, with a peak of 18,887, up 14% on September.

It’s nowhere near its launch, when it peaked at 111,172 players at once in April 2023. But three months after launch, in July 2023, it was averaging about 2,830 players on Steam, so it’s busier now than it was then.
