Game Review: Resident Evil 4 returns in the form of a masterful remake - The AU Review

If you needed proof that remakes can print money, look no further than Resident Evil 4 Remake. New estimates from analytics firm Alinea Analytics suggest Capcom's 2023 reimagining of the survival horror classic has sold approximately 16.8 million copies, generating around $560 million in revenue. That would make it the most commercially successful remake released this console generation. With Resident Evil Requiem now carrying the torch for the series, the franchise's commercial momentum shows no signs of slowing.

How that 16.8 million figure stacks up

The last official number Capcom put on record was 13.6 million units sold as of March 31st, 2026. The new estimate of 16.8 million sits comfortably above that baseline, suggesting the game has continued to move copies steadily across the past few months. The $560 million revenue figure factors in the full commercial lifecycle across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PC.

These are estimates, not confirmed figures. Alinea Analytics works from a range of market signals to project sales data, so treat the specific numbers as directionally accurate rather than gospel. Still, the gap between 13.6 million confirmed and 16.8 million projected is plausible given ongoing discounts, new platform availability, and the general staying power of the title.

The full remake rankings this generation

Here's the lowdown on where the top remakes reportedly sit right now:

Loading table...

The gap between first and second place is striking. ARK: Survival Ascended at 7 million is a solid result for Studio Wildcard, but it sits less than half of RE4 Remake's total. The Last of Us Part 1 at 6.3 million makes sense in context: Naughty Dog launched it to coincide with the HBO series, and that strategy clearly paid off. Oblivion Remastered at 4.5 million is respectable, though questions remain about whether Virtuos stepping back from post-launch support limited its long-term ceiling.

Why RE4 Remake pulled so far ahead

The key here is timing and execution. Resident Evil 4 was already one of the most beloved games ever made, and Capcom rebuilt it from the ground up rather than applying a surface-level coat of paint. The original's reputation did the marketing heavy lifting, but the remake had to actually deliver, and it did. Word of mouth across social platforms drove sustained sales well beyond the launch window.

The franchise's back catalogue also helped. Players who enjoyed RE4 Remake had an entire series to explore, and Capcom kept the game visible through updates, DLC including the Separate Ways campaign, and consistent promotional pricing. That's a playbook other publishers have tried to replicate with varying success.

With the remake market only getting more crowded, including upcoming projects like Silent Hill 1 Remake and more, RE4's lead may be difficult to close. What most players miss is that 16.8 million across roughly three years is not just a launch success story. It's a game that kept selling.

What comes next for the series

The commercial case for continuing to invest in the Resident Evil franchise has never looked stronger. Resident Evil Requiem is the next major entry, and if you want to get up to speed before diving in, check out our guide on how long it takes to beat Resident Evil Requiem to plan your playthrough.

RE4 Remake's reported numbers set a high bar for what a remake can achieve when the source material is strong and the execution matches it. The next few years will show whether any other project can get close.
