Modder builds a GTA multiverse with portals between three classic Rockstar games

GTA San Andreas' Grove Street remade in Fortnite - RockstarINTEL

A modder has done something Rockstar hasn't attempted since the original Grand Theft Auto in 1997: put Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas into the same playable space at the same time. The creator, known as DryxioGTA, posted a video demonstrating a portal-based mod that connects Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas, letting players walk between all three games without a single loading screen. For fans still waiting on Grand Theft Auto 6, the community's response was immediate: “We got inter-GTA portals before GTA 6.”

How three games run as one

Here's the thing that makes this more than a visual trick: all three games are running inside the same process, sharing a single Direct3D device. Each portal is a live GPU texture, not a pre-recorded video or a captured window. The other game is genuinely active behind the portal surface, simulating traffic, physics, and world state in real time.

The portals themselves sit in San Andreas' Grove Street, each one color-coded to its destination. Walking through one swaps you to the relevant game and its corresponding player character instantly. GTA 3 drops you into Claude's Liberty City, Vice City hands control to Tommy Vercetti, and San Andreas keeps you as CJ. Saves, missions, and settings remain independent for each world.

What most players miss in the demo is the cross-portal interaction. DryxioGTA fires a weapon through a portal and hits pedestrians in a different game's world. Both worlds register the event: peds in the shooter's current city turn hostile, and a wanted rating triggers. Two separate game simulations reacting to one action is the part that has the modding community genuinely floored.

The mod is still in active development and does not appear to have an official release name or public download yet. DryxioGTA shared the demonstration video on YouTube, but no release date has been announced.

The community reaction says everything

The comments on DryxioGTA's YouTube video tell you exactly how people feel about this. "The fact that you can shoot the peds and other objects through the portals is just beyond unimaginably insane," wrote one commenter. The "inter-GTA portals before GTA 6" line spread quickly because it captures something real: the GTA modding scene has been doing extraordinary technical work for years, and this particular project lands at a moment when anticipation for Rockstar's next release is at a peak.

The GTA trilogy has one of the most dedicated modding communities in PC gaming, and DryxioGTA is not a newcomer to it. The technical depth here, running three separate game instances in a shared rendering context with live cross-world interaction, is the kind of work that takes serious expertise in both the engine and graphics programming.

What this means with GTA 6 on the horizon

The timing is pointed. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for a November release on consoles, and the anticipation around it has already reshaped the release calendar for the rest of the year. Developers across the industry have been moving their own launch dates to avoid competing with Rockstar's release window.

That context makes the modding community's energy around the classic trilogy feel like more than nostalgia. Players are revisiting Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas with fresh eyes, partly because GTA 6's return to Vice City has put the whole series back in focus. A mod that lets you hop between all three original 3D-era settings in seconds is exactly the kind of thing that lands differently when the next chapter is weeks away.

For players who want to get up to speed on what Rockstar's next entry actually includes before it drops, the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition guide breaks down everything in the premium version, and there's a full breakdown of all GTA 6 editions, prices, and pre-order bonuses worth checking before launch day.
