What's free this month
Three games are available to claim for PS Plus Essential subscribers this month, all available on both PS5 and PS4:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III - The full package, not a demo or limited version
- For the King II - The tactical roguelike RPG sequel with solid co-op support
- CrossCode - A fan-favorite action RPG that's been on wishlists for years
Here's the thing: this lineup is functional rather than flashy. Modern Warfare III is the headliner by name recognition alone, but CrossCode is genuinely the sleeper pick here. The game has a dedicated following that's been hoping it would hit a subscription service, and July is finally that moment.
Last call for June's lineup
If you haven't claimed June's games yet, the clock is running out. The outgoing lineup includes Grounded: Fully Yoked Edition (PS5), Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 (PS5, PS4), and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide (PS5). Once July's games go fully live across all regions, June's titles drop off the free list permanently.
Grounded in particular is worth grabbing before it leaves. The Fully Yoked Edition is the complete version of the survival game, and it's a genuinely good co-op experience that gets overlooked in these monthly roundups.
The bigger picture behind this month's drop
The July announcement arrived during a rough stretch for Sony. The company confirmed it's ending physical disc production for PS5 games, a decision that's sparked significant backlash from players and sparked conversations well beyond gaming communities. There are also signals pointing toward another PS Plus price increase on the horizon.
That context makes the monthly free games feel like a smaller story than usual, but the games themselves are still worth claiming. Skipping a month because the headlines are bad still means missing out on titles that cost money to buy outright.
